8 month only eating purees and rice cakes!

Does anyone have any advice? My 8 month old DD started on solids happily about 6 months and was going great guns - happily eating decent amounts of most fruit and veg pureed in various combinations. Was just starting on different textures, soft lumpy food etc when she suddenly went off solids all together anf for about 4 days would only eat miniscule amounts of yoghurt etc plus milk (mixed feeding, normally 2 x formula and 2 x bf's per day). She has started eating again and will wolf down rice cakes/toast etc plus yoghurt but as far as other food will only eat Ella's Organics sachets - any of the fruity/veg ones and totally refuses anything else including home-made puree. Still having 4 milk fees per day too.

Any ideas???

It's not a big issue at 8 months tbh, just keep offering bits of fruit and veg, sticks of cheese etc. Leave them on her tray and just let her touch them if she wants to. In the meantime keep giving her what she does enjoy eating too. It's all just a bonus to the milk at this point so try not to worry too much.

My 7 mnth old has just done exactly that. It turned out she was teething and just didn't like the texture of the mashed food I was giving her. Could that be the case? I found she prefered food straight from the fridge and Calpol 20 mins before meals helped too. She's just come out the other side and is happily eating again.

If not teething could it be that they want more finger feeding?

Good luck and as James... Says, don't worry, the milk's the most important food.

Thank you. I feel reassured - it's so easy to become obsessed and I've been finding myself getting really tense at meal times which I am sure isn't going to help. Maybe it is teeth - she doesn't have any yet but I think I can see them coming. Is 4 x milk feeds enough for an 8 month old do you think?

Hi Rolo. Does she show an interest in what you are eating? My DS has only ever been really interested in whatever we are eating/drinking.

If she is, perhaps try breaking off little bits of your sandwich or offering a small mouthful of your spag bol or whatever (on your fork, from your plate) if she looks like she might be interested? Don't worry too much about the whole lumps/no lumps thing - I was far too lazy to bother pureeing or mashing and, despite not getting his first tooth until nearly 10 months old, DS was able to cope with most things.

Hi lucasmama08, yes, she is interested and I do give her scraps of stuff (unless it's chocolate biscuits!) but I'll do a bit more of this too.

It seems to appeals to my little one's natural thieving scavenging instinct!

Mind you, I may have created a monster as he's started coveting other things now!!

I was told when my little one was 7 months, and I was doing 4 milk feeds a day, to drop the mid morning one. I did and ds's solids appetite did improve. It was an hv who told me though and we all have mixed opinions on hvs!

So I went from 4 (one when he woke up, one at 11ish, one at 3ish, one before bed), to just morning, arvo and bedtime.

You could try that but this current situ could well be teething and you don't need to change anything. Maybe try dropping a milk if things don't improve in the next week or so?

Thanks mumtojohn - I'm so glad I posted on here - it's been really useful
