did purees with DD. now it's all BLW which does make sense and appeals to me as I know the whole spoon feeding purees would cause DD (age 3 ) to act up. people say messy but purees werent exactly tidy and there was all the peeling hopping purreeing mess.

anyway with purees it was add 1 food every few days. is BLW the same? what are good first foods to go for? fruit seems easier but dont want to encourage sweet tooth only.

DS is 5.5mo, mainly breast fed (1 bottle formula a day), has 2 teeth, good neck support so sits up in highchair with insert but not sitting unaided without and rather large. but soooo interested and upset at mealtimes. tongue movement still quite twisty tho i think. he grabbed DD banana today and shoved in mouth. I know he's a couple weeks off 6 mo but would like to give him the option as people seem to say if they are physically ready they will take it, if not leave it rather than forcing spoonfuls of puree in.

You can do one food at a time if you want, personally I didn't as no family history of allergies. I never worried about encouraging a sweet tooth either - surely they either have one or don't have one. And breastmilk is sweet so you might be screwed already

Chip sized pieces of steamed or roasted veg like carrots or parsnips, or florets of broccoli etc are a good place to start. Avoid hard fruits like apples just yet, if you want to give them then steam them slightly first so they are soft. Banana is a good one but can be difficult for little ones to hold - I used to chop the top inch and a half off the banana and trim the skin so it was like a little banana ice cream, DS was able to hold onto the stem and suck on the banana flesh.

I started BLW before 6 months too and just kept to fruit and veg until 6 months to be safe. HTH

Just offer whatever fruit or veg your DD is having at the time. No need to space foods out

We're doing one at a time, but that's only because my DD has cow's milk protein and egg allergies. We're a very allergic family! If it wasn't for that, I'd just go for it. As BertieBotts says, chip-shaped veg and fruit goes down well. We found roasting veg was good, as it formed a bit of a "skin" on the outside which made it easier for her to hold, and leaving peel on things like melon and banana helped too. It hasn't actually taken long for her to work out how to deal with holding slippy things, and now we just give her half a banana with no peel on and she gets wired in!

We've had to delay giving her actual "meal dishes" IYSWIM because we've had to work through all the ingredients one by one, but we've got through quite a few now and we're starting to be able to put them together - it's such a joy to be able to sit down as a family and all 3 of us eat the same meal (with a few tweaks for Little Miss Allergic). A roast dinner is a good early one for that, and was the way we first gave our DD some meat. Good luck - we're only a tiny way along the journey, but it's brilliant!

Thanks. he's really enjoying being involved more with mealtimes. following the swiped bit of banana, I gave him some steamed broccoli at teatime which he had a go at - dont know if any went in. Today he tackled a bit of soft ripe pear at lunchtime and offered bits of red & yellow pepper at tea but only tried yellow. not ravenously trying to stuff in. Just waving around & gnawing at stuff. Happy to have spoon to play with too. Mealtimes much calmer. cheers.
