Giving both purees and finger foods?

I'm not sure if I am doing the right thing - I have been giving DS mashed up veg, , tiny amount of meat, pureed fruit and sticks of food such as toast or bits of fruit. Then I read on another forum that if you do BLW you shouldn't give any purees so I am confused.... What is the problem with giving both types of food?

Oh he is almost 7 months btw.

aitch - I much prefer the term self-feeding. It describes what we're doing perfectly - think I might switch to using that term

PacificDogwood · 26/08/2009 22:04

Ah, interesting, thanks for that, Aitch and greensnail.

greensnail · 26/08/2009 22:04

thanks aitch, yes that was what i was trying to say, but i also think its not a big deal really.

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 22:06

[shudders at mention of hummous] i'm still picking it out of ds2's crevices 3 days later

greensnail... thanks for the simplified explanation, you're right, it is rather obvious put in those terms... i think i'm suffering from a slight case of oversensitivity as i really wanted to do BLW again and am feeling a bit sulky that we had to go this route

greensnail · 26/08/2009 22:06

we only do yoghurt outside and naked (dd not me ) will be interesting in the winter.

PacificDogwood · 26/08/2009 22:10

I have fond memories of eating huge slices of watermelon naked in bathtub with my brother and 2 cousins, all starkers .

Also enjoyed introducing DS3 (he is now 17 months) to the joys of ice lollies naked (him, not me) in the garden followed by hosing down .

greensnail · 26/08/2009 22:14

oh, good idea, we'll move yoghurt to the bath once the weather gets colder.

Do you think it would be wrong to give her all her meals in the bath?

AitchwonderswhoFruitCrumbleis · 26/08/2009 22:18

that's so funny, the dds very often have yoghurts or those stupid wee fromage frais in the bath. so much easier. and also a good incentive to get into the bloody bath as well.

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 22:29

[takes notes]

how did i get to 3 kids without figuring out clever things like food in the bath?

AitchwonderswhoFruitCrumbleis · 26/08/2009 22:30

lol... amateur.

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 22:34

slattern without much housepride

AitchwonderswhoFruitCrumbleis · 26/08/2009 22:36

oh yes... why do you think i like blw/self-feeding? less work for me is always good.

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 22:40

lol, i meant i'm a slattern without much house pride, hence me not being motivated to figure out damage control measures like feeding in the bath!

Sadly i find the relief at not having to blend and mush is quickly balanced by the utter horror at the scene of devastation my little darlings have created with a simple piece of broccoli.

We did mangetout tonight...... hideous what a baby can do to slightly overcooked mangetout [boak]

PacificDogwood · 26/08/2009 22:42

Yes, but how do you prevent a annally retentive fussy child from starving himself: DS1 would not touch finger food, hated getting his fingers wet/sticky, just about tolerated holding a breadstick/grissini thing. He is now 6 and still eats jam sandwich cut in pieces and with a fork! Believe you me, if he had not popped out of me, I would not believe that I share a single gene with him (messy slattern, me ).
DS2 who enjoyed speading bolognese sauce on his person/table/wall paper came as a bit of a shock...
DS3 enjoys "self-feeding" mud .

On that note, night-night.

AitchwonderswhoFruitCrumbleis · 26/08/2009 22:47

i think if they won't pick food up you'd wait a while, then wait some more... and then your nerve would SHATTER and you'd crack out the spoons, wouldn't you? if you had any sense...

PinkTulips · 26/08/2009 22:50

I think the wailing of a hungry child would help the nerves along the way... i know some babies can happily wait til 9 months but lets face it most barely get to 6

Yoghurt mess - Sainsbury, Tesco and Asda now all do yoghurt/fromage frais in the kids' ranges in Ella's Kitchen type pouches. DS loves sucking them and feeding himself (we did a mix of finger food and purees, although mostly finger foods because he likes to do it himself).

njmomof1 · 27/08/2009 13:06

I'm going to do both, didn't get a lot (any) info about the types of weaning from HV.

Was chatting on a previous thread about this, having already started purees with DS I'm going to introduce finger foods and if he eats more of that than off the spoon then so be it, as long as he's happy and his weight is fine he can choose which is best for him.

Anyway, even if it's not too successful, it'll be interesting when I get to see him tackle Spag Bol!!!
