Are meals made with adult stock cubes okay?

DS is 9 months old. Today I made a slow-cooked pork and prune casserole and saved a little portion for DS (along with some mash and veg). Then I remembered that I'd used 2 stock cubes to make four adult portions. Will it be too salty for DS when mixed with pots and veg or am I being a bit PFB about this?!

Well 2 stock cubes is approximately 2grams of salt, dissolved into four portions of which he is having what a quarter of one? I think that's fine!

Horton · 16/05/2009 20:54

Two stock cubes does sound a lot but then some stock cubes are much saltier than others. Personally, I didn't let my child have salt at all until over a year but then I was definitely v PFBish!

If the sauce is well 'diluted' with mash and veg, it's probably okay for an occasional thing.

I would have thought a stock cube was much more than a gram of salt. I have some stock (that jellyish long life stuff) in my cupboard that promises 1g of salt per 100ml of liquid. Most stock cubes want you to make them up with 500 mls liquid or similar, don't they?

artifarti · 16/05/2009 21:28

Hmmm, it says on packet that one cube is nearly 2.5g - that's quite a lot, isn't it, times two?

I think as a one-off meal it'll be ok but try and compensate by not giving him any salt the rest of the week.

beautifulbubbles · 16/05/2009 21:30

But surely the more liqued its dissolved with the less salty it is?

Personally I would give it to him

whomovedmychocolate · 16/05/2009 21:40

Blimey, I don't know what stock you are using but I'd switch to a lower salt brand! But still the small amount you are giving him will probably be fine. Can I suggest you experiment with herbs and garlic though in future

artifarti · 16/05/2009 21:55

Thanks all! Will mash it up with lots of veg and pots. I never give him anything else salty anyway.

Hardly ever use stock cubes - we are usually garlic fiends instead!

Oh don't feel bad, DS and DD have been raised from 6 months on various things cooked in wine and ale . Obviously we cook the alcohol out but it still feels odd to be serving beef bourginon to the under-1s!

Horton · 16/05/2009 22:08

I don't think anything in moderation is that bad, definitely don't feel bad about home-cooked casserole. But lower salt stock cubes might be an idea. Or making them up with more water.

And I gave DD the odd cheesey biscuit (v v salty) or bite of bacon or bit of my cornish pasty as a small one and she's perfectly okay now.

And she gets sherry in her gravy at least once a week.

Oh cripes, it had a glass of white wine in it too! I really am a terrible mother...

He'll sleep well.

tattifer · 16/05/2009 22:55

just watch the salt levels

CherryChoc · 18/05/2009 15:26

You can buy baby stock cubes in Boots - or Sainsbury's do the Kallo low salt ones, if you need them in future.

But really don't worry if it's a one off

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 18/05/2009 15:31

I use one stock cube to 500mls of water - roughly. An oxo has 1.5g of salt per cube, so I use one of those in something that does me and DH and then about 5 portions for DS. The amount of salt each time is about .1 or .2 of a gram for him which is nothing to worry about.

I also use alcohol in cooking, but it all cooks out

artifarti · 18/05/2009 15:51

I did a similar calculation to yours Alibaba and figured that by the time I factored in the mash and veg, it would be okay...

...and then the little darling turned his nose up at it! Hours I spent slaving over that hot stove and fretting about it...
