Hi,

A question for puree folk and not BLWers - at what age did your baby or should a baby start to use their own cutlery?

DD started at 15 months (but I still help her sometimes if we are in a hurry) I think that was probably quite late, but on the other hand it meant she was fairly competent from the beginning at finding her mouth etc.
She still prefers to use her hands though.

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 12/05/2009 11:30

why is it not for blw'ers?

KerryMaid · 12/05/2009 11:32

Thanks Tabitha.

Hmm

I am intrigued by the notion that either BLW babies don't use cutlery, or that the 'rules' state that puree babies use cutlery at a different stage.

whatwouldyoudothen · 12/05/2009 11:35

About 12 months is standard isn't it?

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 12/05/2009 11:45

me too flowerybean

ZoeC · 12/05/2009 11:46

When they want to and can. I made cutlery available all the time, dd1 really didn't much use it until 3 really. I encouraged but didn't fuss. Dd2 was much more inclined to try for herself.

KerryMaid · 12/05/2009 11:47

Oh, there isn't.

It's just I put this in weaning and as it's a bit of a slow topic so I thought I'd put something in that meant people kept bumping it with faces.

Thanks girls.

I suspect that the OP isn't sure if it's different for babies who are BLWed rather than anything more controversial

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 12/05/2009 11:53

yeah right
whatever
pathetic

KerryMaid · 12/05/2009 11:55

does this mean they can get stuff onto a spoon themselves and get it in their gob? My DD (12 months)has been feeding herself from a loaded spoon for ages but I haven't let her get near the grub with it yet to do it herself

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 12/05/2009 12:00

lol kerry

TheMadHouse · 12/05/2009 12:03

I have a 2 and a four year old and they often revert to using fingers. I dont think there is a set time, I used to just give them a spoon to mess about with, from when they could hold one. Most of the time they opted to use thir fingers as it was quicker nad easier.

FrankMustard · 12/05/2009 12:04

all my dcs started using spoons to feed themselves from the start of weaning - with messy results, but were all competent using a spoon to feed themselves by 12mths and ds4 will be 2 soon and he's been using a fork and a spoon to feed himself no problem for a few months now.
walkingwomb - any reason you don't let your 12mth old feed herself?

Seona1973 · 12/05/2009 12:15

ds and dd got on better with little forks than spoons to begin with. I made them available at meals and they were using them by 1 year. I did a mix of puree and finger foods.

FrankMustard · 12/05/2009 12:15

Sorry, my post sounded a bit "off" - I was only wondering as I find it a lot less hassle to just leave the dcs to get on with it themselves rather than have to supervise every mouthful! Of course, I spend a good while wiping up the floor after each meal, but ho hum!

wastingmyeducation · 12/05/2009 13:05

Hmm Grin

FrankMustard · 12/05/2009 14:39

at me, wasting?
lol - I've lost it today

wastingmyeducation · 12/05/2009 18:24

KerryMaid · 12/05/2009 20:30
