Millet as a weaning food

Does anyone know if it's okay? I think it's naturally gluten-free (may have that completely wrong) so I thought it might be good made into porridge. My only concern is that it can be bitter, but obviously I'm not going to sweeten it - might add some banana or something.

Anyway, if anyone knows about using millet as a weaning food I'd be interested to hear. Thanks.

I've just found a few web pages saying it's gluten-free and quite a good thing to start them on

Millet? Isn't that for budgies.....?

DS is singing like a canary! It was quite nice actually and he tucked it away very happily. He much preferred it to that baby rice yik!

WOW! I thought it was just for budgies, though I thought the same about cuttlefish too untill I tried it

I used millet flakes for porridge from about 7-8mths, in lieu of wheat based cereals - mixing mashed banana, or stewed and pureed apple/apricots to sweeten. Gradually replaced millet with oats from about 1 year. (Was trying to avoid gluten until a bit later than NHS guidelines). Other good gluten free weaning stuff: buckwheat flour (for pancakes - great finger food for older babies), barley coucous.HTH.

I used it (usually mixed with fruit purees). Or boiled the grains with apple juice. DD used to really like it.

I gave dd Quinoa too (sweetened with apple juice), but she just spat it out. She didn't like the texture of either Quinoa or Millet.

Millet is surprisingly tasty when cooked properly. I don't know how to cook it though.

Just like normal porridge:

1 tbsp millet flakes
150mls (5fl oz) water or formula milk
expressed breast milk/formula milk to thin

Place the milet flakes in a small saucepan with the water/formula milk. Stir to disperse any lumps. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5-6 minutes until the mixture thickens. Take out a portion and allow to thicken further. The porridge will be very smooth already, but you can push it through a seive if you wish. Thin down to the required consistency with expressed breast milk or formula milk.

Makes 6-8 servings. Keeps for 24 hours in fridge, suitable for freezing.

My ds loved it! It comes from this book, which I found very useful:
