Hello, ds(6m+)has been having porrige but is getting bored with it and more interested in our plates. Once he dove and grabbed a fried potato from my mom's plate... we were quite impressed. Point well-taken

French toast cut into fingers, also done with raisin bread is lovely

flier · 02/05/2009 11:30

or an omlette.........

Aranea · 02/05/2009 11:40

chip-shaped bits of cooked carrot, steamed courgette, sweet potato, broccoli florets all going down very well here.

Also I made some oat & apricot biscuit things (from aitch's babyled weaning site) which I must confess I think taste like cardboard (maybe I got the quantities wrong) but they seem to go down pretty well.

Aranea · 02/05/2009 11:41

oh and banana of course, and slices of ripe nectarine, plum etc. She'll guzzle anything.

ninedragons · 02/05/2009 11:44

How is your tolerance for mess? Ravioli with tomato & veg sauce (big chunks of vegetables like aubergines, mushrooms etc) is very well received but not something you'd offer to a toddler sitting on a white carpet.

sweetnitanitro · 02/05/2009 11:48

Steamed green beans are easy to hold on to and very healthy. Make sure you steam them a bit longer so they aren't too crunchy. My 6 month old has no problems with holding and eating them but I don't think she's convinced about the taste lol.

I've had avocado suggested to me as well and I read in that NHS book that cheese is a good finger food but I'm not sure on that one- has anyone tried it?

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 02/05/2009 11:53

erm, just anything off your plate

just give him a portion of what your having

and perhaps buy some more wipes

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 02/05/2009 11:53

what would be the problem with cheese?

sweetnitanitro · 02/05/2009 12:29

Nothing wrong with cheese for a toddler or older baby but my dd is only 6 months and I wondered if it might be too much for her at the moment. She only has 2 little meals a day and is still BF the rest of the time.

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 02/05/2009 12:35

do you mean too rich for her tummy or not 'baby food'

she will be fine with everything excpet shellfish, nuts and I'm sure there is something else but I cant remembaer what sorry

just serve her small portions of what you are having and enjoy watching her learn to eat it

will be messy though

kidowner · 02/05/2009 12:39

sushi (sometimes filled with tuna mayo), strawberries, blackcurrants, asparagus spears, prawns, tinned mackerel, melted blue cheese or brie, yum! My dc love whatever is on my plate!

Isaidno · 02/05/2009 12:49

cheese is quite salty so you don't want your baby eating loads of it, but nothing wrong with it otherwise.

sweetnitanitro · 02/05/2009 13:35

Yeah I was concerned about the richness and the salt content, she's only really had a few homemade fruit and veg purees and a bit of baby porridge and rice. Think I'll wait a little while longer before I give her cheese. Thanks for the advice!

ShowOfHandsNoLongerKissesKunes · 02/05/2009 13:41

Anything. No shellfish, no nuts, no honey. No added salt.

DD just ate with us from 7 months.

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 02/05/2009 13:42

oh a puree-er

right sorry

Aranea · 02/05/2009 16:45

Trinity, did you mean that as disdainfully as I read it?

MiniMarmite · 02/05/2009 19:34

My DSs favourites are:
broccoli
dates (washed)
toast
cheese
raisins
dried apricots cut into strips
potato (cooked of course)
asparagus
polenta (cooked and then spread into a layer, chilled and then sliced)
rice cakes
peas (takes forever though)!

ruddynorah · 02/05/2009 19:42

finger food is just food really. only they can't manipulate cutlery so they use fingers. shepherds pie is finger food if you eat with your fingers. no need for owt special

accessorizequeen · 02/05/2009 19:54

You could have a look at the BLW site(s) for ideas as that's all finger food really. Just google baby led weaning. There's a recipe for porridge pancakes on there (haven't tried it yet).
Melon, rice cakes with stuff spread on it (pureed fruit if you like), dried apricots stewed overnight, roast veg of any kind all go down well in this house (dt's are 7 months).

maamajullah · 02/05/2009 22:40

Thanks alot for all the very useful info. I really dont understand 'pureeing'. Why is it done?

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 03/05/2009 00:54

aranea
yes it probably is

but not because I'm trying to upset you or anything

just becasue every bone om my body screams at me that it doesn't make any sense whatsoever

and I did say sorry
meaning that allo my advice would be useless because you still feel that there is 'baby food' and adult food'

which in my opinion is bollocks

and I am allowed to have my opinion

have a look at this

it is enlightening if you can let go and actually see it

Aranea · 04/05/2009 11:25

whoa Trinity. I wouldn't be upset because you weren't responding to me. I had posted earlier offering finger food suggestions, but was a bit taken aback to see you responding in such a hostile way to sweetnitanitro who was just asking whether cheese was ok and mentioned that her baby had had some purees.

I can't understand why there should be any aggro over how a person chooses to feed their baby for what is after all a very short period of time. I don't think there's any evidence that it makes any difference to anyone, and a mix of purees and finger foods is perfectly sensible and healthy imo.

mamajullah - I think it's really just that for some people it seems more convenient and portable and less messy. Or if you're talking about really smooth purees, maybe it's parents who are a bit frightened about choking and don't have confidence that their babies can chew with their gums.

sweetnitanitro · 04/05/2009 11:51

Aw, bless you for defending me but I'm too busy laughing at being called a 'puree-er' to be upset .

MiniMarmite · 04/05/2009 12:41

Totally agree Aranea, I think there is some evidence that prehistorically (and in some current primitive cultures) mastication of some foods before offering to an infant may have taken place and had some benefit so it's just a bit like that really (although some of the benefit may have come from contact with saliva). Don't think there has been a huge amount of research though.

Chulita · 05/05/2009 10:00

Isn't it BLW if your LO stares at your cuppa as it travels past their little face to your mouth, they grab your Hobnob and scream when you prise their dribbly hands off it, you give in and make some instant Organix porridge, scoop it up on a spoon and they grab the spoon and help you smear it all over their face, up their nose and if you're lucky in their left eye before finally getting a tiny smidgeon into their mouth?? If I was following the rules I'd be waiting another 3 weeks but DD gets very excited about food!!

...and yes, I'd always prise her dribbly hands off my Hobnob cos there are some foods that just aren't 'baby foods': Hobnobs, Dark chocolate Bounty and lemon meringue pie
