i never even thought about buying her her own milk, as the older girls are all over 2, so its been semi-skimmed for years

for one meal i think it would be fine, but my first thought was isn't there alot of salt in ready brek?

misdee · 01/05/2009 07:59

Too much fibre not good for babies either. I don't know how much fibre there is in ready brek? In the long term they do need to have full fat milk as they need fat for brain development I think. If it's that or nothing then it isn't going to be a problem just this once.

alicecrail · 01/05/2009 08:08

I think that Ready break and the boxes of baby cereal are nutritionally about the same, i remeber looking it up when DD was small. Be warned though - it sets like concrete!

Supercherry · 01/05/2009 08:50

I should think ready brek is fine and semi-skimmed as a one off, but you really should stock up on whole milk for all your DCs as it's better for them than semi. I think semi is slightly higher in protein than whole milk so wouldn't be good to give to a young baby often as protein is more difficult to digest.

ilove · 01/05/2009 08:55

That's a lot of salt...you need to triple the sodium value and add a bit to get the salt content. My DD has kidney problems and I have to read EVERYTHING. Putting only the sodium value is very misleading.

theyoungvisiter · 01/05/2009 09:03

ilove, I think you are wrong - according to the packet of readybrek we have there is no added salt.

Sodium is less than 0.1g (as misdee says) which is presumably just the naturally occurring trace sodium in the wheat.

theyoungvisiter · 01/05/2009 09:06

also as misdee mentioned, it's not 0.1g per 30g, it's less than 0.1g sodium per 30g.

It's also listed as less than 0.1g per 100g, so presumably the actual amount of sodium is far less than this, it's just that

misdee · 01/05/2009 09:50

yes its under 0.10 for 100g of cereal as well.

but wont be using it again as dd4 had a nasty allergic reaction to either ready brek or milk.

my older dd's are 4,6 and 9 and on the general advice are fine with semi-skimmed milk.

Semi skimmed milk is better than water. But for future buy whole milk - you can freeze it in ice cube trays or breastmilk storage bags, if you want, which means it lasts longer - if she is the only one in the house drinking it.

ilove · 01/05/2009 16:15

There may be no added salt, but my DD has to have less than 2g of salt per day...it is a flipping nightmare.

misdee · 01/05/2009 16:22

the only cereal based product in my cupboard which may be less salt/sodium is real porriage oats. which states it has a trace.

everything else was higher, inc rice crispies, oat hoops and dh crunchynut cornflakes.

I must admit that i was shocked when i found out that a bowl of cheerios had as much salt as a bag of kettle chips!

theyoungvisiter · 01/05/2009 19:02

I think the people who are thinking of the salt content may be thinking of weetabix which does have (quite) a lot of salt

Seona1973 · 01/05/2009 20:00

weetabix doesnt have that much salt - 0.25g in 2 whole biscuits which is an adult portion. If you gave half or 1 biscuit that salt content is reduced to 1/16th (for half) or 1/8th of a gram of salt (for 1 biscuit).

notcitrus · 02/05/2009 14:21

Sainsburys basics weetabix has less salt and sugar and is much cheaper!
A (7.5 mo) will eat it happily once it's been left for 5 min to get properly soggy. He likes ready brek too. But he took a few weeks to get used to mush rather than puree cereal like baby rice - I encouraged him with lots of fruit mixed in with it.

A pint of whole milk lasts long enough for breakfasts for 5 days or so.

hi

when my daughter was 6 months i was giving her ready break with semi skimmed milk and had no bother with it.

the way i look at it, there is vegan children, children with dairy allergies out there who are perfectly healty so giving you little one semi skimmed shouldn't do any harm

i now give my little one full fat. she's 10 months. but friends who have had babies at the same time started their 6 months old of full fat and found they didn't take to it. si've slowly being introducing full fat and she's fine

i think the concern about ready break was - news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/404667.stm but that was 10 years ago and salt content has been reduced a lot since. and their baby was also getting adult gravys' and not getting enough water to make up for the dehydration cause by the amount of salt in the diet
