Milk when out and about for over 1s

Hi, DS turned 1 recently. We've been gradually mixing cow's milk into his formula feeds which works fine, he's starting to be reasonably successful with milk from a cup. I'm just curious about what people do for milk drinks when they're out. For some reason I anticipated never having to buy another tub of formula, but don't feel great about carrying cow's milk around out of the fridge (this might just be me though, I hate room temperature milk, has to be cold to taste right). So..what do you do? Water only? Those cartons? Just take some cow's milk? Formula and make it up as needed?

DS now refuses to latch (as of about 5 days ago), so please don't suggest BFing.

Why is warmed up formula seem ok to U but not tepid milk?

I just put cold milk in a sippy cup at start of day, it doesnt go off that quickly as it warms up -- not before it gets drunk anyway. Not that often that we're out for long hours or weather is that warm.

does he need milk when you are out?

If you think he can't last why not take some cows milk in a flask?

Choices would be:

UHT milk carton
Buy milk from wherever you happen to be (most places sell those little milk bottles or cartons now)
Cartons of formula for emergencies
Formula powder to be mixed in with boiled water as required (don't know if this is still OK to do - it's a long time since mine we're small )

But as long as he's eating and will drink water, it's not really an issue tbh and will become much less so pretty quickly.

i used to take cartons of formula for ds1.
LIke you I wasn't happy carting cow's milk around all day, esp if we were going to be out for a long time.
wasn't til much later I realised you could get little cartons of uht cow's milk.
so, i'd use either of those tbh

VictorianSqualor · 25/04/2009 19:47

TBH, LadyBee, I wouldn't bother.
I'd just give water.

LadyBee · 25/04/2009 19:47

lljkk, that is a very good question.

I think it's the food hygiene thing. I make up the formula right before he drinks it - take water in the bottle and formula in the measuring thingy and mix right before he drinks so it's not sitting around with potential bugs brewing.

I'm a bit paranoid about him getting dodgy tums etc because the moment it happens the knock on effect on time off work etc is huge (you know, 24-48 clear after episodes, always seem to occur on the days I work)

Tommy - also a good point. We always carry a sippy of water around so if he's thirsty he has that. So maybe I should just forget about it. He does love his milk, though - really chugs it back when he's given a bottle rather than a cup, and he had morning tea and afternoon tea milk drinks (as well as breakfast and before bed). So potentially on a day out could miss both. Hmmm.

I didn't know you could get cartons of UHT either .
I might just get a few of those and keep them in the bag for when water doesn't seem enough.

He's being quite difficult assertive about eating at the moment, and when he gets like this I always feel that at least the milk fills him up.

ladybee, it's really ok to give him milk still
I posted about this when my first was at the same stage and I didn't know what to do, and everyone said "meh he doesn't need it"
but at the end of the day he liked it, it's good for him, it comforted him when he was tired out and it was minimal fuss for me taking it for him

so you do what you need to for him

thehairybabysmum · 25/04/2009 20:04

Water or buy one of those insulated child cups and add a couple of ice cubes in wiht the milk when you go out.

Personally though i just carry water in a sippy cup and buy a glass of milk if we stop anywhere to give to ds.

goldrock · 25/04/2009 20:14

I'd suggest a small lunch box with a couple of the ice blocks you can get - I'm not sure exactly what they are called but I mean the rectangular things that you put in the freezer and then pack with your food/drinks to keep them cool.

TabithaTwitchet · 25/04/2009 20:14

I don't often carry milk around, but I do take yoghurts and cheese often on days out, and always keep them in a little insulated cool bag, together with some ice-packs. I have occasionally taken milk as well, and 8 hours later it has still been beautifully chilled.

great minds goldrock

Yes, TT my youngest is 13mths and quite a bit younger than my other DCs so we are often out all day in the school hols and he has his lunchbox just like the others which people always think is very funny but just seems natural to me.
