what is it.

Lulumama · 20/04/2009 10:33

you can make home made food for your little one if you have a saucepan, a sieve and a fork. if you want to puree stuff you can use any hand held blender or mash stuff through a sieve and add the water you cooked it in to make it smooth and runny.

If you're concerned about not cooking the right sort of foods there are loads of recipes on mn here

Loads of books as well but the MN ones are free!

BigBellasBeerBelly · 20/04/2009 10:46

Oh I see it's an implement rather than recipes!

What lulu said then

curlywurlycremeegg · 20/04/2009 10:47

I had one, it was a waste of time as DD started baby led weaning by herself, just started to pick food off our plates, so bypassed purees completely, as she enlightended me to BLW DS2 was weaned this way and bump to be will also be.
To give an honest opinion of it I think it's over engineered, DS1 is 14 and was weaned the traditional way, purees, I found a steamer that I would usually use for family veg anyway and a braun type of hand blender the only equipment needed.

LizzyIzzyLou · 20/04/2009 10:49

I agree, if you're pureeing food all you need is a steamer (my cost £7 from Argos) and a braun hand blender is all you need

BigBellasBeerBelly · 20/04/2009 10:52

If you already have a hand blender or a food processer no need for more kit.

I bought a hand blender but couldn't get the hang of it (must be really thick) and used the food processer instead. So the hand thing was a total waste of money!

Lulumama · 20/04/2009 10:54

hand blender worth investing in as you can use it for blending soups etc .. have a braun one,it is excellent.

you don;t need any special cooking equipment to make food for a baby

and if you do baby lead weaning, you don;t need to mash or puree.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 20/04/2009 10:58

Lulu what am I doing wrong?

Whenever i used it stuff sort of went everywhere and didn't seem to do much actual blending. It was crap. At the back of the cupboard now but I have another on the way...

BigBellasBeerBelly · 20/04/2009 10:59

baby on the way that is, not blender!

Lulumama · 20/04/2009 11:00

you have to move the blender around and make sure you get all the lumps and not take it too high out of the pan, or you do splatter !! some things take longer to blend than others..

BigBellasBeerBelly · 20/04/2009 12:00

All i seem to get is splatter! Not like on the telly at all...

Never mind.

lizziemun · 20/04/2009 12:11

You have to make sure that it is near the bottom of the pan then you don't get splattered.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 20/04/2009 12:37

Will have a bash when I get to pureed apple stage sometime around xmas!

Thanks all

mummytowillow · 23/04/2009 20:43

I've got one, it was useful as it cooks it all to, then you puree it. BUT its a lot of money for how long I used it, only used it for about five months and it cost £65!!

I sell you mine for £30 if your interested!!! {wink}

ChocOrange05 · 25/04/2009 19:35

It is expensive and not necessary but I like it because its small and convenient - makes small batches, you don't have a few different pans/hand blenders etc - and it fits nicely into our small kitchen. DH and I also use it for making stuff for our dinners (puree's for deserts / sauces etc) but we are quite into cooking.

Although its £60-70 I think the resale value on eBay is quite good - £30-40.

Habbibu · 25/04/2009 19:44

It strikes me as very expensive for what it is - I'd invest in a decent hand blender and basket steamer, as you'll use those long after the baby is weaned.
