Dairy products for baby with milk intolerance?

RuthChan · 13/04/2009 22:01

DS is 5 months old and I am planning to start him on solids next month.
When weaning DD she loved yogurt and cheese, and they formed quite a large part of her early solid diet.
DS is intolerant to dairy in some way. (I have never taken him to the doctor about it, but he gets a rash if I drink milk etc, which goes when I keep off it.)
Is DS likely to be able to eat dairy products himself? If so, when?
I wonder how those of you who have had to keep off dairy products while BFing have coped when weaning???

my nephew had many intolerances, including milk, which made is mouth and through swell and he couldn't breathe. a nightmare, as you can imagine. in the end, Oatlea (a milk made from oats) was the only one that suited.

thankfully, between ages 4 and 7, many of his intolerances seemed to disappear and he now has an epi-pen for his nut allergy.
so there is hope! good luck.

DS has had to keep of dairy products which use cows milk but has been fine on soya products and on goats milk/cheese which might be worth trying, he had mild excma and throwing up when on cows milk. He is now 10 months and ebery now and again we give him a small amount of cheese or butter on toast to see how he reacts and he seems to be growing out of it. Get in touch with your HV/GP and get referred to a dietician as well. We have an appointment with one next month, mainly fo advice on how to introduce properly again.

Also rice milk for cereal.

nightmare. rice dream and oatly are the best substitutes. Green veg has much more calcium than milk btw.
we fed our very fussy non eating ds lots of shepherds pie with brocolli in and mashed cauliflower with the potato, adding oatly to it and 'pure' spread from sainsburys.

lots of hipp organic banana rice pudding instead of yoghurts there's no dairy in it and ds loves it.

also i give him a teaspoon of flax seed oil every day to substitute the essential fats that he would get from milk and cheese.
occasional soya yogurts although they are not good for boys are they.

its been hard work and i lost so much weight being dairy free myself. still bfing about 10 times a day at 14 months which is the hardest bit

Hi Ruth

If he gets a rash when you take in milok, then chances are he is casein intolerant, also known as cows milk protein intol.

I am basing that on my experiences; I am casein intol, as are 3 of my 4 children.

Goats milk has a subtly different form of casein; this means that some poeple can have it. not all but many, we can and also sheeps milk products (I love manchego cheese for example).

A asein intol can pass, but is not as assumed likely to do so i think as a alctose intol.

There are a very great many products about these days, usually in supermarkets. DS4 (the still BF 1 year old) has a soya alppro yoghurt 9check for the tick, those are calcium supplemented) for breakfast each day, he doesn't have goats yet but does have a real love of toffuti cheese spread on a cracker (daitry free soft 'cheese' from holland and barratt).

There are a very many recipes about these days, but it does sound as ifd it's casein so avoid lactofree milks etc. A baby with a lactose intol woudln't usually stopr eacting if you aovided dairy, whilst a casein intol one would

First of all i think you need to see your GP and try and get a referral to an allergy sepcialist. It sounds quite serious if your DS is getting a rash when exposed to dairy through your breastmilk.

My DS is also dairy allergic and we use rice milk and oat milk and cream (Oatly). I would avoid soya as much as possible as dairy allergic children are highly likely to develop and allergy to soya as well.

RuthChan · 14/04/2009 19:45

Thanks everyone. All that advice is great. I have been living on soya substitutes to avoid his reaction to my dairy and that seems to work. He has been vomitting less and his skin is also better. I didn't know that soya can also cause problems for dairy intolerant children as well. Why is soya bad for boys in particular? Should I be avoiding soya while BFing or just not give it directly to him?

It's something to do with it mimicing oestroegen and can affect their fertility.

It is ok in small quantities, it's just not recommended when it is their only food source i.e. soya formula, so you should be OK eating it while bfing him.

Peachy · 15/04/2009 09:06

Is it prove, about the soya? I know I rea t but was never certain.

DS's don't have soya formula however (well ds1 did but he's 9 now LOL) so only yoghurts / ice cream, mainly rice milk now or BM

WibblyPigRocks · 15/04/2009 10:28

I've had similar issues with my DS - although we are now trying to introduce dairy, having spoken to a specialist. I had to really push for a referral to an allergy paed - the Dr I saw wasn't happy about referring me but I got a little bit arsy and when I saw the paed, he was lovely and very understanding.

Fortunately, my LO hasn't reacted to my milk - so your DS may have a more severe allergy so it's worth speaking to someone, I think. It's such a worry, isn't it?!

Agree with what trixy said about soya formula - check out the FSA website for a few more details on that but don't just search google - there are some total nutjobs out there claiming all sorts of rubbish and it's unnecessary scaremongering IMO.

Finally, I just wanted to say that rice milk has been a godsend and DS loves it - which is more than I can say for any dairy I'm trying to introduce. Also love the pure spread.

WibblyPigRocks · 15/04/2009 10:30

ooh, just wanted to ask kalo - what age did you start giving flax seed oil? Although I am trying to introduce dairy, DS isn't keen and I want to give up BFing NOW!!!! He is 10mo BTW. I am happy with the amount of calcium I can get into but the essential fats are a concern - esp as he's such a little thing!! Sorry for a thread hijack

kalo12 · 15/04/2009 11:32

wibblypig - i started about six months, i take it myself aswell, it doesn't taste great but my ds seems to love it, it is the only thing that he actively opens his mouth for. you can stir it in to cold food aswell, but never hot food.

also i give him bifida bacterium powder which he also loves.

he is now 14 mths and still bfing aboutt 10-15 times a day and night, its driving me insane.

RuthChan · 15/04/2009 19:26

Thanks again everyone. I am not worried about formular issues yet as I have no intention to stop BFing in the near future. It's reassuring to know that I'm probably not harming DS with my soya yogurts and milk. The rice milk sounds interesting. I'll have to see if I can get it here in Belgium.
