dd4, 5months old, grabbing food already

she can sit well in her chair, and has recently taken to grabbing food when i'm eating with her sitting on my lap.

is it ok to let her do this? she has gummed down on a wispa before i relaised she had grabbed it (not ideal weaning food i know), and also on my toast and gave that a good suck as well.

she plays with cups and plates, usually grabbing them and chucking them on the floor.

at wispa

What's wrong with you woman, I know if someone has MY chocolate within a second

BabyG is hte same. However, he will grab anything if its close enough (including DD's hair "MUUUUUUUUUUUM! He's got my HAAAAAAAAAAAAAIR")

MamaG · 11/04/2009 22:50

I haven't weaned him yet.

I weaned DD and DS1 at 4 months as per hte then guidelines. I don't know if I feel silly for waiting til 6 for him as other two are ok, or guilty for weaning htem at 4!

misdee · 11/04/2009 22:51

oh she loves chewing my hair. big fistfuls of it. strange girl. i'm mesant to be having my hair cut, but cant cos it will take away her favourite snuggly comforter lol.

she gets so excited by food. the look at her face at mealtmes watching us eat is priceless. i almost feel sorry for her.
dd's 1+2 were weaned at 4months, and dd3 was just short of 6months.

I really should get a highchair for BabyG. He usually lays under his gym thing and can't really see us! He's so sociable, he'd love to sit with us at mealtimes, i think. He can't sit up unaided yet though, prefers to lol around like a fat little buddha!!

misdee · 11/04/2009 23:18

we hav te antilop ikea one. but no tray. need to go to ikea once kids are back at school to get one

Hello! DD is 20 weeks and has been fascinated by us eating for about 4 weeks now. If I drink or eat while she's feeding she pops off the nipple and stares. She's recently started having a strop if she sees us eating. I've given her some baby rice but honestly it's too much faff. A few days ago I was eating a bagel while she was feeding and she grabbed the other side of it and was trying to shove it in so I ended up giving her a finger of it and she loved it. In fact when I got worried that 20 wks was too young for chunks and took it off her she threw a wobbly If BLW is actually BL then surely if she's grabbing food and shoving it in with chuckles of glee at 20 wks that's ok right? So...if our babies are keen to have a slobber on toast and banana, does it matter if they're not the magic 6 months? Seriously, I've taken to eating when she's asleep cos she cries if she sees us eating and isn't holding any herself...

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 12/04/2009 12:11

Don't most babies at 5 months try to put anything put in front of them in their mouth. I have found DS eating shoes before....

The guidelines do say 6 months.

misdee · 12/04/2009 12:26

yes she chews everything, and is so excited by food and us eating, which is why i am asking if i should stop her if she grabs some food or not.

i think she is just 'gumming' it rather than eating it iyswim.

Misdee You can let her hold, play and suck (supervised at all times). What you shouldn't be doing is putting things into her hand or mouth.

misdee · 12/04/2009 12:31

so if she swallows stuff of her accord thats ok?

i mush-fed the others

OP posts:
pbo · 12/04/2009 12:33

That's just like DD, she is so excited by food and watching us eat. Try babyledweaning.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=73, go to the forums and have a look. I went to the 'introduce yourself' bit and searched 'early' in the search bar and quite a lot of people have started their babies "early". At the end of it all it's up to your LO and you to decide. Why do we expect all babies to develop at the same time? DD isn't rolling over but will sit on my knee and make sneaky grabs for my cereal/toast/malteasers.

DuffyFluckling · 12/04/2009 12:34

The chances are she would probably be absolutely fine if she was allowed to have a good chew of whatever she grabs now. Well, not Whispa, but sensible things. With mine, I didn't want to chance it though.

The argument that she's grabbing and gumming everything doesn't work for me, because if she grabbed your lipstick she'd gum it and suck it and smear it all over her chops, but that doesn't mean it's time to buy her a Cutee Darlin' make-up set.

Babies grab and suck. Babies copy us. It's what they do.

If you've waited to 5 months I don't get why you wouldn't just wait to 6 months. If it might be okay not to wait, but it is definitely okay to wait - why hurry?

That's just me though. I certainly couldn't be faffed to disapprove if anyone weaned at 5 instead of 6 months.

misdee · 12/04/2009 12:37

she'd have a hard tgime my lipstick, i dont have any lol.

i know what you are saying

OP posts:
StarlightMcEggzie · 12/04/2009 12:44

No, you don't have to check for the tongue thrust. Provided you don't shove things (on a spoon) into her mouth to override it, her tongue thrust will just push the food out if she isn't ready.

Playing with food when not ready to eat it may be a bit wasteful, but isn't harmful.

You might want to revise your first aid on choking though, for peace of mind.

misdee · 12/04/2009 12:47

have already done first sid for choking course. i did it a couple of months ago, as my last course was over 6years ago (i dont count LVAD first aid as normal first aid lol)
