Help! ^ months today and won't eat?!

My ds is 6 months today and I have tried him with purees on and off for last few weeks as he is having milk every 3.5 - 4 hours again. He hasn't been the slightest bit interested and refused to open his mouth for anything exept milk.

So have just given him a tiny corner of my toast and he has quite happily sat there and sucked/chewed it.

What do I do lol?!

What do you do?

Nothing

Babies don't all wake up aged 6 mths in desperate need of solids. It's just a sensible time to start offering them. Sounds like your baby will get a lot of enjoyment from feeding himself, so purees might not be the easiest way to go!

diedandgonetodevon · 01/04/2009 15:00

If he's not interested, just relax and go at his pace. He does not have to eat just because he is 6mo today.
The majority of a baby's calories and nutrition will come frommilk for the 1st year so you are not in a rush.

IwishIwasmorechocolatey · 01/04/2009 15:01

Relax - keep offering bits of food here and there and he'll start eating more when he's ready.

3.5 - 4 hours between feeds is pretty good!

EasyEggs · 01/04/2009 15:02

Thanks, just never had this with the other 3 as they were on purees to start with from about 5months.

Just read something about BLW, can anyone explain how we do this/exactly what it is please, stupidly naive 1st timer here

BLW - cook food for the rest of the family with no salt. Dump some on babies high chair tray. Leave them to eat it at their own pace. You may scatter some spoons in if you feel like it, and maybe chop your veg in chunks (carrot batons rather than rounds f'rinstance).

Generally, just let them eat what you do, and as much as they want.

EasyEggs · 01/04/2009 15:13

Wow this sounds much easier than the months of specially preparing purees just for them to decide they don't like it anyway

Also which foods are the ones they are supposed to avoid to start with?? My memory of anything weaning related has been well and truly obliterated!

No honey till 1, no whole nuts till 5 (I think that's right). No Guiness till 18 Everything else is fine

Pretty simple really - it helps you eat healthier as a family too

Looks like I'll be rethinking my diet of easter eggs and biscuits then

Thanks for the advice

Just leave it a bit longer. Ds2 was like this then about 29 weeks he suddenly scoffed everything in sight!

coochicoo · 01/04/2009 19:19

I introduced solids at 6 months and dd mostly played with it. She seems to have just got the hang of eating in the past couple of weeks. She's nearly 9 months.

Don't worry about it

jules43 · 01/04/2009 19:41

Hi

My son was weaned at 5 months then got a few illnesses and teething from 6 to 8 months and stopped eating...

He is now 9 months and has just started loving his meal times again, it is such a relief however now he only drinks 12 to 13ozs per day of formula milk plus a yoghurt! If its not one thing its another!

CherryChoc · 02/04/2009 22:28

Baby Led Weaning is so easy. You need to watch their salt intake - so as CMOT said don't put salt in your veg, pasta, rice water etc when you cook or in things like spag bol. Avoid packet mixes and jar sauces if you can as well as they tend to be high in salt. Usually easy enough to make your own, I've found, and it works out cheaper and doesn't even take much longer. The only other thing I've done when adapting family meals is cut veg much larger - and I mean veg in things like spag bol too, so the peppers or muchrooms etc - it needs to be chip-sized, so that they can grab it in their fist and still have a big enough bit sticking out to chew on, as they can't open their fists on purpose to get to the food.

There is a website www.babyledweaning.com with loads of pictures and recipes and advice, and a book called Baby Led Weaning by Gill Rapley, but just go with the flow really!

PS My DS' first food was toast as well

Easyeggs and Jules43 my DS is a combination of your two!

So cross with my health visitor. I just called with concern about his v sore bum and she asked is he weaned. He is JUST 6 months and not weaned as he is simply not interested. In fact baby rice and many purees have kept him up all night with tummy trouble, farting and discomfort. Is this just part of weaning and I need to persevere?

HV said 'well I have never heard of baby rice upsetting a baby' and 'he MUST be weaned at 6 months it's VERY IMPORTANT that they learn to chew' and 'he will not be getting sufficient calories from milk'.

Good grief will a few weeks really make a difference?

Tired of feeling like I'm failing on the weaning 'target'. I think he's doing fine really and will eat when he's ready.

Trying mash potato today....anyone have tips on easy to digest food?

butterscotch · 03/04/2009 21:52

BLW fan here I'm afraid....before they are one its just for fun!!!

They get all the nutrients from their milk under 1 really .....chill relax and ignore HV most of them are inconsistant with their advise anyone one will tell you one thing another another in my experience follow your mum instincts and your be fine

surelyyoucantbeserious · 04/04/2009 07:37

Thanks butterscotch. Yes all I wanted was a advice on constant poo-ing and bad nappy rash when in fact I got unhelpful advice on weaning. She even said 'babies are a nightmare aren't they' !?!
