Bugger - DD just vomited in front of my mum

Started BLW a few days ago and going really well - roast dinner (veg and chicken) the first day, yesterday pear, apple and cream cheese on toast for breakfast, pasta in tom sauce for lunch, roast veg with feta and couscous for dinner. Lots of mess but lots of fun and this morning was v proud to see smidge of red pepper in her nappy.

Mum and dad came round today to drop off a sofa and were very excited by the prospect of seeing their darling (and only) grandchild eating her first proper food. Duly strap her into the highchair and hand over the pear and banana (boringly same as y'day but decided at last minute couldn't be arsed to make porridge ). All going swimmingly until DD starts coughing and spluttering and pukes up few bits of banana and load of mucus Doesn't help that my mum is vom-phobic anyway, but think they are now both a bit freaked out.

Have to say that, although they clearly don't agree with all my parenting decisions, they have been brilliant at keeping their views to themselves (unlike when I was pg) but now my mum is suggesting purees would be better ... Argh. Mainly just annoyed becuase feel it's given them a really -ive view if BLW

Oh dear. Nevermind. I'm sure they'll come round. I have a friend that kept telling me I was giving 'proper' food too early. I started ds1 on purees but gave him finger foods at about 8 months and she kept telling me he'd choke and be sick blah blah blah blah.
My parents don't always agree with my parenting choices, but I always just say to them, they had their time, these are my dc's.
Then my dad says, listen to her thinking she knows it all!

differentEggD · 29/03/2009 12:04

just point out that she is just as likely to gag on purees if she takes a gulp.
Besides, she doesn't want to see her gd take a step backwards does she

Yeah - think we might hold off eating with the grandparents for a couple of weeks until she's had some more practice!

It's just sod's law that she's managed four meals without any problems at all and then vomited while they were here. I also feel slightly guilty that I was so airy about it ("Oh, they do that, she'll be fine") when my mum had a mini-panic (though on the plus side, DH, who can be very PFB, wasn't at all worried). My poor ma - she isn't taking the you're-a-bad-parent-give-her-mush-you-loon route but this plaintive please-don't-kill-my-granddaughter tack. Maybe we'll just steer clear of banana for a bit

My ds choked and gagged alot more on purees then he ever has on proper foods. We were in a shopping centre food court, I was feeding him a jar and he started choking so I whipped him out of highchair and held him upside down, which made the people around me panic etc, but I have never had to intervene like that on solids.
Tell your parents that solid proper food will encourage her to use all her muscles which will help with speech.

Problem is always going to be that they have weaned three kids and I have two days of experience ... But I was weaned at four months onto purees and mumble like a bastard, so yes, maybe I will mention that

When my ds vommed I just smiled complacently and pointed out that it was so reassuring to know that he has a good strong gag reflex.

Anglepoise · 29/03/2009 12:33

Actually, my dad did say something like that (retired GP)

My dd was sitting on my mum's knee today and I gave her some pear and she did the same - gag gag, cough cough, red eyes, vom.

My mum doesn't agree with blw (or many of my 'new age' parenting methods ) so I reminded her today of the many times that dd has gagged on puree.

I'm just glad my dad wasn't there as he has a habit of whacking dd on her back when she starts coughing which just seems to make everything worse.

Oh dear - it came up today and my mum basically thinks that BLW is nonsense: she thinks it's a brand new idea, made up by one person and Just Not How It's Done. Gah. Not that she gets to decide, obviously (especially as she weaned me at four months so she could go on holiday without me for two weeks!) but still would be nice to have her support.

Marla I followed up the banana-puke incident by handing DD some yogurt on a spoon and she actually made a decent fist of getting it in her mouth after a couple of practice attempts (first one went straight in her eye, also quite a lot distributed around her face - think they were quite impressed by her getting the right end in her mouth at all though).
