Feel like crying, just back from weigh in and she is underweight, she is 5.48kg. Always been small but I weighed her with me on my scales a few weeks ago and things looked fine so I didn't bother rushing to get her weighed again at clinic. HV is saying that boob isn't enough to keep her going and that she'll be needing milk every 2 hrs to keep her going... had introduced another bottle during the day but HV said don't bother just start giving her some solids. HV was very pleasant and not stressed but I don't know what to do now. She does have a lot of breast feeds - i'm demand feeding - and I have had some concerns about her lack of flab that other babies have.

I had planned to do BLw and started a couple of weeks ago but she wasn't grasping very well and not really very interested, also tried spoon feeding and that didn't go down either, so thougth I'd better leave it for a bit. SHe is getting over a cold so don't want to overwhelm her with new stuff.

What is the best high calorie food to give her to help her to put on weight? Veg/rice mixed with Full fat milk? Maybe doing purees at breakfast and BLW at lunch? Want her to have fun exploring food but also want her to gain weight.

also what to do about evening feed? is supper the last meal to introduce solids at? (god that was dreadful grammar, I'm ashamed)

At the mo she is waking at 6.15, gulp, for a big feed and then goes for a nap at about 8.45 or 9ish - and for the last couple of days she's done a 3 hour nap at this time.

Don't know if that's because she's waking so early and because she's been up at night. Bloody hell I have a headache thinking about all athis....

No time for a big reply but I didn't want to leave this.
Is she really underweight or is she just small? Kind of hard to know from what you say.
Milk has more calories than veg purees, so if weight gain is the issue she needs more milk not spoon-feeding mush.
I know lots of people will answer you...gotta run before my kids kill each other!

she is skinnier that all other 6mo babies i know. People always ask how many weeks she is rather than months (even HV did this). Doesn't have any real "folds" of fat like most 6mo babes. Very alert, active, chatty but definitely skinny.

Both mt DDs were barely on the 9th or 25th centile if they were lucky, never had that cute chubby baby look. I really stressed over this will DD1 til I realised she ate what she needed and developed perfectly. With DD2 even the HV left me alone about her weight because she accepted i just have slim babies. I am (was) very slightly built so it was onviously a genetic issue. How ironic when they worry you about a perfectly happy healthy slim baby when the news if full of obese kids and adults, i know which one i prefer!
Just relax and enjoy. BTW I found breakfast was the last meal to really kick in with weaning

titferbrains · 25/03/2009 17:10

um tks drivin - she's never been above 2nd percentile and is somewhere inthe grey area below the 0.;4th at the mo so just want to get her back on the chart again then I'll feel a bit moer relaxed.

just given her ahunk of banana after she rejected baby cereal with milk and mashed banana in it. she gummed for a good long while so I know some went in. Will overcook some carrots for her tomorrow. Will also try baby rice, haven't tried as thought I'd tried to give her nice tasting things. Can't understand why she won't eat cereal, I think it;s lovely

Hi Titforbrains

I know what you are going through. My Lo is a tiddler (never been above the 0.4 centile) & 6 months too! Tried weaning him a couple of weeks ago but he wasn't that interested & he is now in the middle of a horrible cold so I am not even going there. Try not to worry about weight (I know its difficult) but she will put on weight in her own time - as long as she is following the line its fine. She sounds great - I bet she's a real cutie!

boogeek · 25/03/2009 18:10

OK, but if she has never been above the 2nd then being down the bottom isn't unusual for her - that is why I was asking. If she'd dropped from the 90th or something, then there might be cause for concern, but if she is small she is small...are you enormous or small yourself? It is not better to be big, the charts are the natural spread of a population.
(Avocado is nice and fatty and both mine love it. Either as slices for her to try and pick up, or mash it onto toast or ricecakes?)

mrsgboring · 25/03/2009 19:16

Yes, was going to say avocado too - mix it with mashed banana to sweeten it up. My DS was below 0.4th centile and solids did in our case do the trick, but as others have said, your DD has nothing to worry about the size she is, so try not to stress too much.
