Those of you who take a firm stance on waiting 6 months to wean, what do you think about this?

DS is nearly five months and we've been invited to a weaning demonstration and tasting session next week. Should I let him try the stuff that's on offer or do you believe Nowt But Milk Shall Pass Their Lips Until Six Months?

Would you believe it, this is my second dc, but we tried the blw route with dd1 and it didn't work out, so still feel totally in the dark about weaning in general.

The stuff is probably there for you to taste - yum yum

he's not even 5 months yet? i wouldn't tbh.

i weaned dd at 4 months in a desperate attempt to ease her reflux and it was madness, pointless messiness that probably contributed to the intolerances and food issues we're still dealing with.

ds1 snatched food off my plate and ate it at 5.5 months and was definitely ready but if he hadn't grabbedc the food i wouldn't have offered... weaning him was fun and he's a much better eater than dd

duffpancake · 15/03/2009 15:50

That's what I was thinking, just wondered if I was being a bit p2ndb.

Why didn't the BLW work out?

FWIW, my ds was BLW'd and didn't eat solids until nearly 9 months - he just wasn't ready, and was a v late developer from that point of view. I think people assume that because you can give solids from 6 months, you have to, and it's not the case!

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/03/2009 16:32

You do know that as you've started this thread asking for those who don't approve of early weaning to comment, that you are going to be advised resoundingly not to let your dc taste any don't you?!

I think that you should taste baby rice if it's on offer, and then you'll see why it's child cruelty to feed it to babies .

duffpancake · 15/03/2009 16:50

CSWS I know I was just wondering if tasting is really the same thing as feeding but I guess as babies eat such tiny amounts it is.

Raisin, my dd was still not really eating at 12 months-- at 2 and a bit she is a very picky eater and still hardly eats at all. I'm still going to offer ds finger foods but I'm planning to go the puree route this time.

I weaned at 18 weeks ish with DS and it took a while, was more difficult etc.

With DD I waited until 6 months and she has been a dream. I know they are just different children but it has seemed so much easier.

Also doing BLW with her and as she is 6 months it is so easy - she just has bits of what we are eating (obviously within reason) and it seems so stress free.

I do a "smelling" session with my students where I get them to smell some jars of baby food. Is particularly amusing if they have hangovers lol (I do let them refuse the option if they dont want to, not that mean lol).

I dont really understand the point in letting her taste things? Is there one? Dont mean this antagonistically at all

duffpancake · 15/03/2009 21:30

As I said, my instinct was not to, but then I thought, I'll be there, there'll be baby food, am I being a bit literal about the 6 month thing.

Oh I'm planning to goyou get a free hand blender! (whore sucker for kitchen gadgetry ) It's organised by the local authority and I think they basically show you how to make lots of different purees etc. not a flogging you stuff thing at all.

I know I don't have to give him anything but, as in many of the disconnects between MN and RL, not many people around here wait 6 months.
