blw - what foods would you reccommend starting with?

Am just about to start weaning dd2 - did purees with dd1 which worked fine but have been letting dd2 have bits off our plates for a week or so and she loves it so think blw might be better for her - what first foods would you reccommend as am a bit worried about her choking - she'll suck quite happily on a an apple quarter but it stresses me out!Carrots and banana seem like obvious choices but what else would you suggest? Thanks!

well i'd say a fear of your child choking is admirable and sensible, tbh. the thing to do with that, imo, is to arm yourself with what to do if the worst does happen. no point you choosing that moment to flap about like a headless chicken. have you thought about going on an infant resus course? i was much comforted about the idea of choking when the very experienced nurse giving the class confirmed that she'd never yet lost an infant to choking and hadn't actually heard of a death in her career.

what else?

AitchTwoOh · 15/03/2009 20:38

you can introduce what you like when you want to, if he's over six mos. yes to chicken casserole, shouldn't be a problem but you'll get a feel for what and when he can manage (although expect him to surprise you).

i do a lot of chicken thigh casseroles, dd was fine with those. and i cut carrots, celery etc much bigger while she was getting started, same as for soup. then i'd pick them out, put them on the high chair and let her do her worst.

no advice on ikea and your marriage...

popsycal · 15/03/2009 20:39

Yes - I think I ought to d an infant first aid course. That is a very sensible idea.
Choking and road safety are my two 'things'

Shal; I start a differnnt thread

the maternity hospitals tend to run them. i'm goinig to refresh my skills before weaning dd2, just in case i've forgotten anything.

popsycal · 15/03/2009 20:51

I thinkn our local surestart may do too.

thanks aitch

whoops. don't know what happened there.
enjoy your cake.

popsycal · 15/03/2009 21:02

sorry weird
it smells of cake

FrannyandZooey · 15/03/2009 21:11

we have had great success with baked potato and baked apple
cut a thick wedge - even a quarter - with plenty of skin still on
the skin gives something easy to hold and the softness of the baked fruit / veg is a winner

ds2 has no teeth and eczema (allergies?), so we are needing to be quite inventive about food
at nearly 8 months he is progressing onto peas and sweetcorn - fab

This is DDs first week of BLW, she turned 6 months on sunday, still no teeth. I've offered roast and steamed veg, a bit of meat, toast, pitta bread, apple, melon, pasta, yellow pepper, I dunk a spoon in yogurt and leave it on the tray etc but I'm just a bit concerned that i'm doing it wrong as she is my PFB. I'm finding myself really struggling to think what to give her too. TBH i'm really uninspired with it but def know that I want to do BLW not purees.

AitchTwoOh · 17/03/2009 19:48

you aren't doing it wrong. it's impossible to do it wrong, unless i suppose you freak them out by wiping them and hovering and generally not leaving them to it. oh, and have a look at what you're eating, if it's proper food and not salted just let them loose on it.

well, we appear to have started with dd2... green beans. she LOVED chewing them, was snatching them out of mine and dd1's hands, it was hilarious. no nappy proof yet, i think it's just chewing at this stage.

she's technically not 6 mos corrected age yet despite being 28 weeks, so i'll be sticking to veg for the next while i think. i'd forgotten how funny they look.

lollipopmother · 17/03/2009 21:09

I read your blog Aitch and have taken heart in the fact that I've been doing most of what you've mentioned on there, great blog by the way!

DD had minor success with some carrot and sweet potato this evening. It's a learning curve for me as much as for her because I cooked the beans far too much so they just turned to mush as soon as she picked them up, grim. Oh, and next time I must remember to take the mini sweetcorns out of the steamer, DP found them four hours later still in there!

AitchTwoOh · 17/03/2009 21:12

lolol that used to happen to us ALL the time. just stick 'em in the fridge and let her have them tomorrow.

blw's an easy-oasy sort of a thing, that's all you need to bear in mind. if you're not enjoying it, do something else.

lollipopmother · 17/03/2009 21:46

Yes, well they were declared 'minging' by DP who threw them away and the leftover sweet potato with cinnamon miraculously found its way into my mouth, so there is nothing left for tomorrow but hey-ho!

popsycal · 18/03/2009 20:37

hey aitch
isnt your dd2 older than my ds3?
i am confused
or was she due after him
hmmm

we have had a couple of scary coughinng fits from ds3 and tbh I am not enjoying it at the moment

he seems to have a very easy-to-trigger gag reflex

AitchTwoOh · 18/03/2009 21:21

she probably is, she's 28 weeks but was prem so is technically 22. she's had some green beans last night and a chip tonight so i think we're off and running...

if you're not having fun, remember, just do something else.

popsycal · 19/03/2009 19:15

i thought she was a good bit older than ds3
i am sure ds3 is 289 weeks today
i could be wrong

popsycal · 19/03/2009 19:15

28 weeks even

popsycal · 19/03/2009 19:18
