Snacks for a 13mo to leave around

What kind of snacks can i leave around in easy access for my 13mo DD? I can't really think of anything better then biscuits/cakes which she's not really fond of, corn rings/sticks and raisins. Fresh fruit/veg pieces get stale pretty quickly when left on a plate for a while and if i leave whole ones she will just be biting a piece from each for fun or throwing them around and not touching hem again. Any other ideas?

Have you thought about a snack box DS has had one since 13 months.

nappyaddict · 14/03/2009 13:38

BTW DS has fruit, yogurt, vegetable sticks, unsalted nuts, malt loaf, rice cakes, crackers, cheese, cheesy flapjack, veggy muffins

i think it can be good to leave small amounts of food out, even if they won't be eaten, because then your child is being presented with the food often, and has the choice about when/ whether to try it out.

snacks: mini rice cakes, bread sticks, veggie sticks, dips, chunks of cheese, dried fruit, bits of toast/ bagel, hard boiled egg, cheerios, cut up ham/ turkey???

Hmmm... Good idea, thanks for bringing it up!
I think DD is s bit too small for such a snack box, although it really depends on its contents. She won't be able to open yogurt or any other packed stuff except for probably paper boxes or cartons which she knows how to deal with and i'm afraid will be eating fruit together with film if i wrap them. And it's just going to be too messy if I put in everyting you mentioned without any wraps.
She's now using a snack trap with rice cakes, raisins, corn rings and a few mini cookies.

And what do you do with food like cheese, yogurt, etc which has to be kept in the fridge, if your DS doesn't eat it on the day you put it in?

Oh just looked it's not malt loaf he has. It's orange fruit loaf and fruity teacakes.

DS has a velcro lunch bag which he can open up easily and he has had it since 13 months. Underneath there is a zip compartment which i put an ice block in. I put anything he doesn't eat back in the fridge. I put an open plastic box in the bottom and then everything goes in that loose so he hasn't ever needed any help apart from yoghurt which he will bring to me if he wants it. With apple pieces you can put lemon on them to stop them going brown. I sometimes put pieces of chicken, beef or lamb in and I've never noticed that it's become too dry to eat. Yes you do get a few crumbs on the floor but nothing that can't be swept or vacuumed up easily.

I have left out whole fruit for DD since she was about 12 months old. She has always preferred her apples etc whole though.

AT the minute she is eating a plum which I put on her little table in the living room when we got back in earlier. She has just had her dinner (veg with homemade garlic chicken goujons) and loves having a fruit snack after.

For things like raisins, dried apricots I use one of those bowls(don't know the name of them) with the non spill lids but the DC can still get the fruit out.

snack trap

I use one of these, keeps the fruit freah and DD can still get at it.
