What is the best way to give apple to reduce choking risk, heard apple is one of the most likely culprits. Should i cut it into fingers and steam it til its soft??

Also did anyone do a first aid course in scotland and who ran the course and how much should you expect to pay??

THANKS

Give them a really big chunk - like half an apple. That way they have to scrape bits off with their teeth and can't get a big bit off.

I did resus with the HV - ask them or childrens centre, and you should be able to get one for free,

Grating, steaming or really really thin slices are the best way to avoid choking hazards with apple.

Thanks, i have tries it before with a big chunk and despite no teeth can bite of scary chunks.

When i steamed it she couldn't get it off the tray, and neither could i as so soft and kind of suctions on!!

Will try steaming it in a diff shape i think.

Don't know that id trust my hv on resus, i used to be a midwife before the kids and i still know more up to date stuff than her, she is shockingly crap altho a really nice women i could do her job with my eyes closed and still be better at it!

Whe my lo (3rd dc) was feeing alot, every couple of hours in the beginning her suggestion was to top up with formula at night. I expect that advice from my relatives who mean well not a health professional

I found apple uncommonly scary, so I grated it. DCs didn't have much interest in it when grated though They are danger seeking missiles. In fact I've only just started giving them whole apples and they are 4 and 2

6inchnipples · 09/03/2009 09:36

thinking maybe i should banish apples from the fruit bowl....

And I still halve grapes for the DCs. God knows how I managed to BLW DS without having a heart attack.

6inchnipples · 09/03/2009 09:45

yeah grapes scare me, a friends little one choked on one once when we were out for lunch. I do occasionally halve them now for the bigger 2 (4 and 2) but not always, depends how much ive been thinking about stuff! No consistency here i'm afraid, and i wonder where i'm going wrong with discipline!!

Personally I just avoid apples (DS 7.5 months no teeth yet) as there is so much other fruit he can have.

As for first aid course, sorry don't know much about Scotland but you could ring your local hospital they sometimes do first aid courses for children free otherwise St Johns Ambulance also run courses but you have to pay.

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 09:52

You should see me twitching nervously at playgroup when someone gives the children whole grapes. I hover, poised to administer the heimlich manoeuvre at the merest hint of choking.

6inchnipples · 09/03/2009 09:58

there was a course advertised at toddler group but it needs 12 interested people and is 50 quid each, too expensive for most of us sahm's
