Refusing jar baby food

finland · 08/03/2009 11:51

My baby is 13 months old now. He has been having home cooked food most of the time but thought I would test out jar baby food as we are planning to go on holiday in April and want to take some jar food as back up. He seemed to hate it! IS this common with babies who have had home cooked food? All the ingredients were things he had had before - it was herby but again he has eaten herbs. Bit worried now what he will eat on holiday as he has allergies so dont trust local food too much... Maybe if I keep offering it to him once in a while he will develop a taste for it? Usually he is not a fussy eater. Any previous experience much appreciateed.

Does he eat finger foods? If so can you take finger-foody stuff as backup instead of jars? (hard to suggest specifics without knowing what his allergies are)

cazboldy · 08/03/2009 12:19

Have you tried it?

but that is for sick not envy.....

frasersmummy · 08/03/2009 12:22

finland I hate to say this but I started my little one on home made foods but when I tried to switch to jars ds would have none of it.

I even tried oepning the jar and serving it in a bowl.. he just refused.

I know this isnt helpful to you ...

hopefully someone can advise you on hol foods

PeppermintPatty · 08/03/2009 12:54

Jar food IS disgusting though. It just means your baby has good taste

wahwah1270 · 08/03/2009 14:14

try going to the local supermarket when you get there a nd buy local fruit bread etc? that's what i did with dd last week in spain. she has always refused jars...

ruddynorah · 08/03/2009 14:24

where are you going on holiday? what foods don't you trust. he can just eat normal food really, fruit, veg, cheese, bread? what allergies does he have?

MerlinsBeard · 08/03/2009 14:25

just give him a smaller amount of whatever you are having. No need for Jars (if he won't take them) esp at his age

Natt82 · 08/03/2009 20:25

Have you tried the the plastic pots (like adult microwave meals) by Heinz & Hipp? They seem to have a little more flavour.

DS2 wont touch them anymore unless he's desperately hungry (12mo) and then only 1/2 the amount - he much prefers homemade now. Luckily we have few allergies so can make do with sandwiches/omlettes in a rush.

wahwah's idea is a good one - does your dc finger feed well? If so, fresh fruit/veg and bread/pasta wont be far wrong for a holiday

My dd1 did this. We went on holiday when she was 11 months. She had previously eaten what we eat but then i obviously made stuff suitable for all the family, no salt, no stock cubes etc. We took those tray baby meals thinking the all inclusive menu would be salty etc but she wouldn't touch the baby stuff (gave it to kitten in hotel) and instead she scoffed the all inclusive menu with gusto. Probably a bit saltier than she should have had but we stuck to the best of what was on offer and she loved it. For a week it was fine and i made sure she had lots of milk, fruit and fresh veg which you can't go wrong with.

Enjoy your holiday!

Hi there. My dd2 was the same, although she did tolerate Plum Baby, although this may be for younger ones (I cannot remember!)

Are you going abroad?

onepieceofcremeegg · 08/03/2009 21:25

It depends on his allergies I guess.

You may well find that he accepts things like fruit purees and rice puddings in jars as these (imo) are more similar to "the real thing". (I could just about eat a fruit pot if pushed)

You may just have to be a bit creative to accommodate your travelling needs plus his allergies. e.g. take some fruit/rice pots. Offer him local foods (versions of what you are having) depending on what he can tolerate.

Our dd1 was gluten free for a while so in those circumstances her main meal would have been something like potato/rice with cheese and a fruit pot for vitamins.

lol at "gave it to kitten in hotel"

finland · 09/03/2009 10:34

We are going to Morrocco so not keen on giving him meat from local restaurants although the hotel we are staying in is very small and sounds accommodating in cooking food for him if it comes to it. He has allergy to milk and egg.

i honestly wouldn't worry. but then i'm from morocco

ask for veg tagines, the veg is always nice and chunky and you are supposed to eat with your hands anyway..so great for kids

i always go by the principle of if i'd eat it myself it's fine for dd.

pispirispis · 09/03/2009 13:36

I found the food gorgeous in Morocco!! Really healthy too, couscous and big pieces of veg, luke ruddynorah says, mmmmmm! Would have definitely been happy with my 10mo dd eating anything that I ate there. Don't worry, enjoy your holiday and maybe take a couple of plum jars or something just for your own peace of mind?

pispirispis · 09/03/2009 13:37

Tsk, I mean like

finland · 10/03/2009 22:01

Thanks for the advice, thats reassuring to know. Any issues with food poisoning there in April?? i assume if we make sure food cooked fresh should be ok...
