To cut or not to cut? She loves sucking them whole but I'm wondering if it'd be better to cut them? Thoughts please?

I have never cut them up for DS but then again he rips them apart with his teeth rather than putting them into his mouth whole, depends on the child I guess

If she has teeth then leave her to it. Make sure you get the brown ones as the orange ones have sulpher (or similar chemical?) in them to colour them whick is bad for babies.

iwontbite · 05/03/2009 20:39

i have to say, I cut them
there are very, very few things I cut up, except grapes and cherry tomatoes.

but, both of my children have choked on dried apricots, so now am a bit paranoid lol

Sidge · 05/03/2009 20:45

You do know they're an amazing laxative don't you?

Shitemum · 05/03/2009 20:47

Cut them up and make sure you dole them out or she could end up with a whole ball of bits in her mouth. My 2 yo DD has choked on dried apricots a couple of times, cut and uncut...

Becky77 · 06/03/2009 16:45

OH God... Just read this... I didn't know that about the sulpher... She's had quite a few orange ones

Sounds like they're a choking hazard either way which is sad because she loves them... She just happily sucks in it for ages though... no chewing them despite having 3 teeth!

Where can I get brown ones from?

sainsburys sell them

it's ok to give them to her, just personally I would cut them in half or something, and only give her one at a time.
if she's anything like my boys she'll be shoving tons in and that's when they choke

Becky77 · 06/03/2009 16:53

Oh right thanks... I shop with Sainsburys so I'll have a look next time.

I'm just thinking if I cut them in half she'll be more likely to try and swallow it whereas at the moment there's no way she could or is that wrong?

There was a case a while back of a baby who swallowed a dried apricot which subsequently obstructed her small bowel when it swelled up. For that reason I would't give whole dried apricots to a small child.

Becky77 · 06/03/2009 17:08

Gosh. What dried fruit is best to give to little ones then? She loves then so much but I think I've been put off giving them altogether

cut them into small bits? then it's no different to raisins

callmeovercautious · 06/03/2009 23:17

Hi again. You can get them as Organic from Juilian Graves or other Health food places in big bags. If you are worried about choking then chop them to the size of raisins.
