Annabel Karmel jumping on the BLW bandwagon

Finger Foods by Annabel Karmel - I guess if you can't beat em, join em. But seriously, those food shots are ridiculous - who would go to those lengths to make food look attractive to a baby?

Also I'm a bit about the suggestion that finger foods are only for those 9 months and above?! Obviously she has missed the DoH's advice that finger foods are offered from 6 months.

stuffitlama I think most peoples problem with AK is that she gets her facts wrong about other methods of weaning!

stuffitllama · 07/03/2009 08:09

oh ok
it's just in the world of weaning one person's fact may be another person's opinion
she may not be an expert but then the experts change their minds all the time too

also I'm not sure why the choking thing is misplaced?
i mean, if a baby's got the pincer movement to pick up a grape isn't there a risk? or is this the risk we take with everything -- I would understand that.

DeeBlindMice · 07/03/2009 08:11

JazzHands - that's what I thought about rice cakes too but dd was given one by a friend of mine and she looooooves them. And actually the baby ones aren't that bad. I do draw the line at those wotsits though.

I now officially hate ak for her comments about her son's future wife. Why doesn't want him to cook for his own children? Silly cow

nooka · 07/03/2009 08:12

Actually I remember my son munching away on carrot, which I thought he had eaten, and then finding he had in fact munched it into little bits and was storing it hamster style ready to spit our into odd little corners. He would have been older than six months though. I remember the days of feeding purees as being amongst the most upsetting of the baby period. If BLW works then it sounds much less stressful (my children are 8 and 9 so prime AK fodder, but eating away just fine now).

stuffitllama · 07/03/2009 08:18

Purees weren't so bad in my memory, but giving free rein was so much less stressful. It's the loss of control that takes a bit of getting used to -- ie: spooning something in you know exactly what's going in and coming out! Putting shepherd's pie on a high chair for grabbing was easier but I had to stop worrying about whether she'd had enough.

Habbibu · 07/03/2009 08:24

Agreed. Stuffit, I couldn't care less what she does (except for all this branded stuff to try to convince new mothers they need stacks of paraphenalia and six books), but her objections to BLW are ludicrous, unfounded, and as she's a well-known figure, misleading a lot of people.

StealthPolarBear · 07/03/2009 08:27

Where on earth is Aitch?

stuffitllama · 07/03/2009 08:32

If she's calling down the other side then that's ludicrous too. And yes, probably defensive marketing.

Habbibu · 07/03/2009 08:37

She seems to assume that parents doing blw are incredibly stupid, and just open the fridge, stuffed with lychee stones and raw carrot to their neglected children, before leaving them unattended. Pincer grip I used as an indicator that dd could eat things like sweetcorn, blueberries, peas, but not things with the perfect shape and texture to get stuck in the windpipe like grapes and cherry tomatoes.

bringonthetrumpets · 07/03/2009 08:41

okay, i think the only reason she keeps dissing BLW is because she needs to keep promoting purees so that she can keep selling books! she's the only one who considers herself an "expert" in the field and she doesn't want to renounce her throne to someone else, so it looks like she's just feeling threatened that perhaps she hasn't had it right all along.

MrsJamin · 07/03/2009 13:43

exactly, bringonthetrumpets. It's not just books she sells either - it's blenders, bibs, freezer trays, spoons, food flask, storage pots, cups, bowls, pasta, toddler 'eat fussy' meals , mess mat, cutlery case... argh. The video is defensive marketing, exactly - protecting business interests not anything else.

what ever will people do with their food processors?

bringonthetrumpets · 07/03/2009 14:21

make hummus?

RedOnHerHead · 07/03/2009 14:28

i use my blender, but for my 4 year old, not the baby, when i make bolognese - apparently he doesn't like onions, and the blender magically "take them out" dontcha know!

I am NOT going to make food without onions!

StealthPolarBear · 07/03/2009 15:56

ROMH my mum used to do onions for me like that - loved the taste but hated the "bits".
I use my blender to make vegi soup, it's lovely and takes about 20 minutes to make - would take all day if I had to shread / gop finely...
