BLW- DD lost her enthusiasm.

DD is now 7mths and we have following BLW since 6mths.

She started off really well and would taste anything you gave her. However now she seems to have lost her enthusiasm and not really overly interested in her meals.

Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Ive also noticed that recently she only seems to want really chunky food/ most dry foods that she can easy grab. Its almost like she doesnt want to get her fingers dirty!

I think at this point the novelty has worn off, added to which they usually haven't developed the pincer grip etc. to have proper control of what they're handling which can be frustrating and they still haven't figured out that food fills their hungry tummy, so some do lose a little of that initial enthusiasm.

Just keep offering a variety of food and milk whenever she wants it and she'll get back into it.

She could also be teething, or coming down with a cold. As wme says, just keep offering, keep letting her see you eat a variety of foods with enthusiasm, and she'll get the hang of it again.

Oh yes, teething! Forgot that one!
Even when they're happy enough the rest of the time, it can upset them at mealtimes.

DD has days like this. Sometimes a few days when she is really not interested but then will surprise me by gobbling everything in her path. Try and be patient and keep giving her a variety of stuff, she will get there.

Have you got a book on BLW? I have yet to start as DD only 5.5 months, but I have a book by Gill Rapley & Tracey Murkeet called Baby-led Weaning, helping your baby to love food.

On p.146-7 it says this:

Many parents find that their baby's progress isn't as smooth as they expect. Some babies make an enthusiastic start but then become less insterested in food for a week or two; many take a while before they actually eat very much at all. All of this is normal with BLW.

It is also fairly common for babies to go through a 'lull' at some point between seven and nine months, when progress with solids seems non-existend and their weight gain slows down a little. As long as your baby is well, is having plenty of milk feeds and is included in your mealtimes, this isn't anything to worry about. It's usually short lived and is often followed by a sudden increase in both appetite and feeding skills. Many parents describe this as when their baby 'suddenly got the plot' and started to 'really' eat.
