Does anyone know where I can get some information on bringing my baby up as vegetarian? I'm hoping to try BLW.

Thanks

I did BLW with DS and we are veggies. It was all very straightforward - started him off on veggie sticks (carrot, parsnip, potatoes etc) and fruit and moved pretty swiftly onto hardboiled eggs, cheese etc.

Him being my third maent that I was already doing meals for the other two so it didn't give me any more work as such and he moved on to soup (to dip bread into) fairly soon. His favourite at about 9m was cheese quiche!

I would really recommend BLW - it is so easy compared to the puree route

this might help too veg society

Thanks Tommy. Do you know if it's OK to give things like tofu? I have read that quorn is not OK.
Not quite sure how lentils and other pulses would work with BLW, could be messy!!!

I give quorn now but he is 2. I can't remember when I started with things like veggie sausages but proably too early - he always wanted to eat what his big brothers were having!

Have a look at Aitch's blog on BLW - here for some ideas.

I used to make lentil pate (watch the salt) and spread it on toast and bread. I'm prettty sure that tofu is OK although I don't really use it a great deal except in sausages (bought - not homemade!) and you can pretty much make anything you have but make it a bit more manageable by putting less liquid in it. Or put anything you eat into a pita and give it as finger food.

It is incedibly messy so don't worry whether you think baby can eat it or not - he will find a way!!

I didn't blw mine but she had a fair few finger, so I suppose I did half and half. Most of it was steamed veg, bread/breadsticks and lumps of cheese, plus the odd easy to handle pulse like chick peas or kidney bean. Also, homemade hoummous eaten with veg or breadsticks. I did give tofu but not often and in the early days only the bland, flavourless one, so it was best mixed into purees. Later on I made "fishcakes" with potato and smoked tofu.

Pancakes made from pulses are an excellent finger food too - just soak beans or chick peas for at least 16hrs, then drain and grind with garlic/ginger/spices/whatever and water until you have a thick paste, then cook in frying pan as you would a normal pancake, spreading the mixture out as you cook. You can also do a mixture of pulses and rice ground up together. My DD loved these, I could even make them with chilli and fresh coriander and she'd stuff them in. One word of advice, they do need to be eaten warm, but you can make a load and freeze and warm up as and when.

Omelette strips is another option. I didn't do it as we kept off eggs until 1yo but after that age it was a handy standby.

I wouldn't do meat substitutes tbh, although I've never had that problem as where we live they're simply unavailable.

finger foods . Of course she had fingers....

Ds2 is 20 months and eats risotto, pasta dishes, baked butternut squash with filling, baked potato with cheese and veg, pitta stuffed with tomato, fruit and veg, soups, tomato based stews, lentil and bean stews etc. I use some Quorn eg mince or chunks but not very often.
He gets yogurt or a milk pudding for afters.

hmmm BLW didnt really work for us, he threw absolutely everything on the floor, and when he did try to eat he choked often, by 10 months i gave up and did purees and loads of amusement to get him to open his mouth, now on ocasion he eats by him self but surely eats well. we are vegan, he loves tofu, i think as everything its a matter of moderation, as too much soy is not good for anyone. So i guess its a matter of what works for you both. Would definitely try BLW first as it sounds great, tho be prepared for mess.
