Would BLW be better for my lively DS?!

I have been weaning my 25 week old son for 3 weeks now and he has never been a big eater mainly due to being very lively and alert pretty much since birth. His breast feeds never lasted more than 7-10 minutes and this is now affecting the way he eats solids too. Basically he will sit for 30 seconds in his highchair or bumbo and then become bored and squirmy and upset which obviously affects how much he eats. At the moment I am managing to get probably about 5 teaspoons into him. He seems better when he has something to hold or look at to keep his attention so for this reason I thought maybe baby led weaning might work better for him but I don't really know much about it.... What do you think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! xx

Hi,

At 25 weeks, eating 5 teaspoons is really good. Don't stress about the amounts... Honestly, it takes a really long time for babies to cotton on to eating and that eating is yummy. I started feeding DS purees and then started giving him finger food at the same time and used to sneak in a spoonful of puree now and then. He then went through a phase of firmly refusing to open his mouth for purees, so I gave him lots of food he could feed himself. Now, at almost 1 year old, he will eat from a spoon but also loves feeding himself with his hands and is just starting to experiment with using a spoon to feed himself. The nursery comments on what a good little eater he is! But it took a long time before I felt confident about the amount he was eating... So good luck! Just try a bit of both and see how it goes...

yes definitely go with BLW - just provide something easy to grasp but soft to chew such as roasted veg sticks or toast (as long as wheat's ok for your family and once he's 6 months).

Thanks so much for your help - you're right Angel about it taking a while for babies to cotton on to realising that eating is yummy! Will try a mixture of blw and purees and see how it goes x

DS sounds similar and will only take a few teaspoons before getting fussy (and only if I give him the spoon to feed himself rather than feeding him). However I've found that if I then spread whatever it is on toast or a rice cake he will go on eating it.

Other times if I smear a little food on his lips with a quick swipe of the spoon, he has a lick, remembers it tastes quite good and starts eating again
