Any vegetarians feeding their LOs meat (BLW)

I'm veggie but want to let DD eat meat until she is old enough to make up her own mind. But I can't get my head around how to give her meat as we so rarely have it in the house. Just wondered if anyone could inspire me........

I'm also veggie (and have been for the last 20-ish years), but ds1 (4 years) loves his meat and I've just started ds2 (9 months) on meat too. They do eat a good mix of veggie dishes and meat dishes though which I think is important to show that veggie dishes are normal and not only for hairy hippies. It just took me a while to figure out how to cook the stuff and I'm never sure whether I've cooked it OK because of not being able to taste it.

I don't eat meat but dp does sometimes. I don't cook it, but if dp makes some, ds has it. I don't know how to cook meat and I don't want to really.

Can you go to grandparents for sunday roast?
Cooked ham? Chicken bites you keep in fridge for snacks? No point in cooking proper meaty meals for one tiny portion.
Just give baby what you eat but allow meat at friends/out? Otherwise you'll waste a lot.

Im not veggie but my kids love roast dinner and its pretty good as finger food (apart from the gravy smears)

if you got a joint rather than say a whole chicken you could just chuck it in the oven for the right amount of time with little fiddling

then freeze portions in gravy to defrost and serve with more roast vegetables or in a yorkshire pudding?

mistlethrush · 19/02/2009 22:46

I also get dh to do the cooking.

Things I can cook include fishfingers, mackerell when I'm feeling very strong stomached, I can roast a chicken (although I prefer not to!). I heat up portions of things in the microwave!

But yes, I thought that it was best for ds to eat as wide a range of foods until he was old enough to make an informed decision.

chicken thighs are good for BLW (meat is juicier than breast so easier for young BLWs i found) and good for zero physical handling of raw/cooked meat and minimal faffing around in general on your part i'd say. buy deskinned ones, just tip into oven proof dish, sprinkle with some herbs (thyme, oregano good) and black pepper and slug of olive oil and whack in oven at 180Cish probs about 40 mins - stick a skewer in and juices should run clear. separate into pieces with a fork (should pull away from the bone very easily) they keep cooked in fridge for a few days. can then serve with whatever veggies you want

chicken thighs also have advantage of being cheap, even organic ones, so you can give her good quality meat but at same time not worry so much about wastage.

I'm not veggie, but I recommend you to start with slow cooking meats that are soft and easy to shred. Recently braising steak and turkey leg have been a hit. I cook them in the oven with onion, sweet potato (or butternut squash or cooking apple), carrots, celery and whatever else I have on the fridge, some water and spices. The turkey leg can be cooked nicely in an oven bag.

I'm veggie but like the OP want to give DD a choice. I don't mind cooking meat though and am used to it as DP eats it. I give her either mince (in the form of bolognese or shepherds pie) or chicken (by cutting nice fleshy chunks from her dad's chicken thigh- cooked similarly to HolidayQueen) with pasta twirls and roast veg.

I also give her fish most weeks and have been using either tinned tuna or salmon. Keep thinking I need to give her some fresh fish so I am planning to try and make a fish pie.

Milkmade · 20/02/2009 08:03

Am also vege but want to give DD a choice - pre-cokked chicken and turkey chunks or slices tend to go down well, and are nice and soft until teeth come (though check that the ones you buy are all chicken not reconstituted rubbish), fish fingers ditto, and sausages also work (though you have to take the skin off. DD always struggled with mince so after a couple of ties I never bothered.

Thanks for all the responses! Think I'll go buy some chicken thighs and/or a joint and freeze sme portions.

If you want to make fish pie without handling the fish too much or are in a rush, i recommend these

rek21 · 22/02/2009 20:46

I'm veggie too but DH eats meat and I'm not too fussed about handling/cooking it. Meatballs (home-made, easy peasy) are great for BLW and you can make a tomato pasta sauce and put veggies in one lot and meatballs in another one. Freeze well too.

My DD loves bacon cut into strips - again good addition to pasta etc. She gnaws it like some little squirrel or something.

To be honest I'm not holding out much hope for her choosing the veggie option when older...
