My ds is 13 months and although he will feed himself when its meals given as finger foods, he is showing no interest in using the spoon with his spoon fed meals.
I have tried a few times to give him a spoon if his own, but he mostly chews it or waves it around. It certainly isnt trying to crap the spoon to do it himself??
When have others started??

Ds did from about 9months, encouraged by his nursery and by us being keen pfb. DD who is much more dexterous than ds, was not in the slightest bit interested (the exception being for cereal where she had no choice) but only since 2yrs+ has she used a fork and spoon and will still revert to fingers.

Dd has just turned 17 months and has only just started trying to hold the spoon and attempt shovelling the food herself. I have been worrying about her disinterest in feeding herself since I spoke to a couple of friends with children the same age who both go to the same nursery. They are a lot more handy with a spoon as at meal times the staff don't have the time to feed everyone individually, they are just left to get on with it.

DD is 15months and has started trying to use a spoon or fork. we tend to have 2, load one up and give it to her to put in her hair mouth and that way she lets you have a spoon back to put food on, but she hasn't liked being fed for a while, a bit independent

I've just recommended these on another thread- expensive but worth it IMO.

Norfolkbumpkin, its nice to hear someone who worries about the same thing. But as ur Dd is abit older i will stop worrying for a little while.

I dreaded getting the response that everyones lo's where doing it by 12 months!!

My strategy from about 12m was to always give dd, as pudding, a spoon and a small bowl with a dollop of yoghurt in the bottom.
She got spooning practice without the risk of spilling a whole bowl /pot of yoghurt and is now (18m) a reliable spooner... until she gets tired/bored/frustrated with it and just digs in with her hands!
