HV advised early weaning at 19 weeks to help with constant night feeding

In my desperation have taken her advice and am giving my LO baby rice mixed with EBM. He's eating really well and cries if he doesn't get fed fast enough.

Am I wrong in following the HV's advice and not waiting until 6 months?

If you aren't happy weaning then don't. If it helps, DS1 didn't sleep through till he was 10months but he was weaned at 6months... Unfortunately weaning isn't a magic way of stopping night feeds...

gecko eats anything and everything that comes near her and by far eats the most of all my 3 girls

she was 2 the other week

I'm still waiting for her to sleep through without boob at least 3 times a night

Got to do what feels right for you as Asuwere said.

LO sounds hungry to me though....

Rice has less calories than bmilk. Though it may be harder to digest. I wouldn't trust HVs on anything to do with breastfeeding or sleep.

Babies often have a growth spurt at 18-20 weeks. They need gallons of milk, so you could just give as much breastmilk as he wants, as often as he wants it.

The night feeding is part of the growth spurt. You can just ride it out, it doesn't usually last long.

JollyTired · 16/02/2009 20:14

It's not that I desperate for my LO to sleep through - it's just that he wakes up almost every 2 hours and this has been going on too long to be put down as a growth spurt.

Teeth? Cold? Something else?

A sleep cycle is 90-120 minutes so it might be that he's waking naturally and can't settle himself off any more. What happens if you don't feed him?

Join the 4-5 month sleep thread in sleep.

We don't know why they're doing it but they are!

AitchTwoOh · 16/02/2009 20:41

are you wrong? that's a bit loaded, don't you think?

if you're happy, and it helps, then you're not wrong. but one of the main reasons i waited and will wait again is that i don't want to start second-guessing myself if something weird happens, like allergies tbh. (not that there's an established direct link, so don't panic).

i've read that, sidge, about the sleep cycles, and i find it's also true of waking cycles. if dd2 is awake more than two hours it's hellish.

i keep dd2 in my bed over night when she's up, or in the hammock, she seems to settle back quite well when she stirs.

where is your ds sleeping, JT?
