Not got the nerve to BLW

Right from first hearing about BLW I thought it would be great for DS. He's put everything he can lay his hands on into his mouth since he was 3 months old. Now 6months he is very dextrous (can take dummy out turn around pass from hand to hand!).
So far I've tried banana and cooked carrot. Both times he picked it up, put it in his mouth and bit a large chunk off the end, (no teeth to speak of just jaws exercised on lots of plastic) At that point I panic and take it away from him. So far the chunks always seem to fall out of his mouth but I have to admit I'm a worrier and not sure I can cope with it on a regular basis!! BLWers convince me it'll be ok!

It will be OK. But maybe you'd feel happier giving him something like broccoli to begin with? The florets are sufficiently "bitty" to begin with that it's less likely to worry you when he takes a bite.

Currently we're trying loaded spoons of various mush. He's quite good at getting a spoon in his mouth and sometimes the food is still on it when it gets there! Although of course his motivation is chewing the spoon, I'm not sure he's noticed the mush yet.

Good idea Port, will give the broccoli a go.

My dd is 28 weeks now, and im not following BLW per se, just giving loaded spoons for her to feed herself when ive got mush, and giving finger foods. I found the best thing to start off was broccoli, and steamed carrot. I had my heart in my mouth when she was first taking bites out of things, but started to relax once i realised she was not going to choke if she gagged. I think they get better the more pratice they have. Good luck, am sure more blw'ers will be on to give you good advice.
