I took ds to his 9-12 month baby check with hv (my first mistake) yesterday, she commented on how he was such a big boy (let see if you reatract that when he is on the scales i thought) and surprise, surprise shw was concerned about his weight......to remedy this i should provide more high calorie, high fat foods like butter (ok i can see that) and pasta (wtf pasta is fatty?)

she si shite
ignore her
if YOU are concerned about his weight gain then maybe discuss wth a proper HV or doctor if all your hv's are shite

has he maintained a centile line??

if he has always been slight then never mind he may alwasy be slight

all 3 of mine followed the 7th to 9th centile

when you think about it to HAVE an 'average' you HAVE to have all the other permutations......

As TR says, the important thing is whether he is following a line (ish) obv this changes when they become active as they suddenly use up loads more calories, and if bf, they do drop a bit when plotted on the current nhs charts when older.

If he is happy, growing, and not dropping through the percentile lines drastically, then you don't really want to get into the adding fat to everything scenario - enjoying regular family foods is much more important long term especially

it's not fatty but is high calorie (compared to veg )and you can eat a lot of it without feeling full.

Monkeytrousers · 06/02/2009 19:49

carbs with fat will ensure weight gain. Fat with protein will do opposite. Need carbs to put on weight, not just fat.

littleducks · 06/02/2009 19:57

i dont fully understand monkey tousers...so should i put butter on the pasta? and if i put butter on steak it 'do the opposite'? make him loose weight or just not put on weight?

tis funny as it was only a few weeks ago i was chastised by another hv for not iving enough veggies

i just said "im not concerned to much as i am still bfing" but i think she could see im not too bothered as he was last weighed at 16 weeks and was 32 weeks yesterday apparently

some people (me included) believe that certain combinations of food help put on weight (my giant arse testifies to this) so carbs and fat help you put on weight whereas protein and fat help you lose weight - it's how lower carb diets work.

littleducks · 06/02/2009 20:25

ah ok, hadnt really heard of that

i tend to offer him a varied diet with fruit, veg, protein and carb as i figured he needs it all as he is growing

and your right littleducks - hopefully the health visitor was just saying if you were concerned about him and wanted to feed him up to feed him a bit more carb and fat mixed together (like bread and butter)
