i had a chat with my hv today and she told me anything goes apart from sugar and salt. But, I want to check with you wise ladies on here because this is the same hv that told me i wouldn't be able to ebf DS because he was such a big baby. Needless to say i proved her wrong!

So, DS is 27wks, is it really a case of "anything goes"?

no nuts or nut products until 1 year (or 5 if you have a Family History of nut anaphyllaxis)

no honey (cos of botulism)

no runny egg cos of salmonella

otherwise all ok!

anyone else...???

Miamla · 04/02/2009 18:42

blimey! so it really is "almost anything goes"!

I won't give him honey anyway because I"m allergic but thanks for the list

oh - and btw - there was in the olden days (prior to weaning at 6 months) a long list of a strict order in which you should introduce food.

Like

rice then apple then broccoli then fish then chicken etc etc

and lots of people still "believe" that BUT I have not seen any evidence to support that approach at 6 months.

So I would agree with your HV apart from the few exclusions above.

But lots won't!

Miamla · 04/02/2009 18:49

well he's already had some potato so we've broken one of the "rules" already! lol!

isn't there something about them not having cow's milk to they're a year old? do you know why? (sorry, being lazy, i should be googling but you've been so helpful so far!) So are things like cheese ok?

OP posts:
boogeek · 04/02/2009 18:50

No - they shouldn't have cows' milk as a main drink until they are a year - but they can have it occasionally, or in cooking. Cheese is just fine.

Miamla · 04/02/2009 18:54

what is it about cow's milk that's a problem? so fine on cereal?

sorry about all the questions, i don't want to give him the wrong thing!

Fine on cereal, fine cooked in cheese sauce etc but it doesn't have the right levels of vitamins etc for it to be their main drink until they are a year old and getting lots of vits from other food.

Seona1973 · 04/02/2009 20:09

cows milk doesnt have enough iron and vitamins to be the main drink but is ok on cereal and in foods from 6 months. Yoghurt, cheese, etc is ok from 6 months too. I actually gave peanut butter from about 9 months as it is considered ok from 6 months if there is no family history of allergic diseases. Both dd and ds are fine with it. Avoid till the age of 3 if there is a family hitory and dont give whole nuts till the age of 5 as they are a choking risk.

gagarin · 04/02/2009 21:47

miamia - cow's milk is more like a drink than a food. So if it's milk that you know is a "meal" in your baby's daily diet it should be breast or formula. If it's a drink - like water - then a bit of cows milk to drink is not a problem.

There is nothing inherently "poisonous" about cow's milk.

Think it's often recommended to avoid common allergens till the gut's a bit more mature, so that would include dairy, wheat, citrus.

Seona1973 · 04/02/2009 22:25

at 6 months they can have all of that though - maybe not all at once!!

wastingmyeducation · 04/02/2009 22:47

Peanut butter etc. is not a problem from 6 months, as long as there are no nut allergies in the immediate family.
It is, however, very sticky!
