hello

i want to start introducing dd to meat etc but cant imagine how she'd be able to eat pieces of chicken or fish as she has no teeth. What does anyone else do please?

They gum it if they really want to consume it.

nellyfin · 03/02/2009 16:33

she has got teeth - they are just under her gums iykwim. It's not the same as a toothless old person with jelly for gums. Her gums will be hard and able to cope with some chewing.

belgo · 03/02/2009 16:34

babies' gums are very sharp and strong.

lindenlass · 03/02/2009 16:35

they gum it to death, suck out all the goodness and spit out a horrid grey bit of mush

wahwah1270 · 03/02/2009 16:36

excellent, thank you. i couldnt visualise what she'd do.

Let her chew on your finger for a while - hurts!

PortAndLemon · 03/02/2009 16:46

If you've ever been gummed by a toothless baby you'll know they are pretty vicious little beasts with or without visible teeth . Also, much of the vitamins, iron, etc., is in the juices that the baby will have no trouble extracting.

MrsBadger · 03/02/2009 16:51

try her and see!

wahwah1270 · 03/02/2009 17:37

i shall try her with some chicken tomorrow.

fish is easier as it flakes and they can kind of slurp the flakes down. Mince similarly. I think chicken is by far the hardest as it's the most fibrous.

PortAndLemon · 03/02/2009 18:03

Slow-cooked stuff (e.g. stewing lamb) just falls apart into bits as well.

wahwah1270 · 03/02/2009 18:39

what type of fish would you start with macao and how would you cook it?

dd loved salmon, still does. she has it just as i have it, cooked in the oven wrapped in foil with a bit of olive oil or butter.

beforesunrise · 03/02/2009 19:37

haddock poached in milk also great! and i make meatloaf and then cut into strips, dd2 really likes it and because it's soft i actually think she swallows some!

cmotdibbler · 03/02/2009 20:43

I have a very clear memory of DS aged 6 1/2 months sitting in the pub with a hunk of steak and gumming it to death. He worked on it for about half an hour until all that was left was this sad, grey strip of connective tissue

pispirispis · 04/02/2009 19:12

Yuck, boke, heave, cmotdibbler and lindenlass! We're vegetarians fgs, why am I reading this thread!? (Could it be because I don't want to go and clear up the kichen perchance??)

Colonelcupcake · 04/02/2009 20:39

Fish is great as is marinated chicken also sausages (check the salt content) I abandoned beef except minced until my lo had a few teeth

Hulababy · 04/02/2009 20:44

They really do manage, even without teeth. DD didn;t get any teeth til she was 13 months old and by then she ws pretty much eating anything and everything me and Dh had. We cut everything up for her to manageable sizes but she could manage any meat and fish including things like steak and roast meats.

macaco · 04/02/2009 22:24

wahwah I offered white fish first, one without bones, sorry can only remember what it's called in Spanish. Think it's hake? Steamed it in the microwave. Salmon steaks too worked well, done the same way.

funnily enough i always found dd had difficulty with mince in the beginning, she found the bits broke up and made her cough. rare steak, otoh...

wahwah1270 · 04/02/2009 22:28

dd had her first chicken for lunch, cut into strips and loved it. She has just had some of our lamb, and a runner bean . Will get some fish in town tomorrow.

hooray! strips of chicken, pork or beef from our (not-too-salty) stir fries and curries go down very well here...

MauriceDancer · 05/02/2009 11:00

sounds great... haven't had a stir fry for ages, you've just reminded me.

Milkmade · 13/02/2009 10:14

I also found that until dd had teeth she preferred quorn fillets and vege hamburgers to meat as they were that bit softer for her.
