Starting weaning next Monday and have no clue what to do...

DD will be 26 weeks next Monday so we will be starting weaning.

I want to do purees and finger food but not purely BLW.

I have no idea how/where to start though. Do I start with one meal a day to begin with? If so, would it be something like breakfast? Can I just give her porridge for a week or something?

Help!

Why not BLW?

I always started with lunch, as they have had a nap, are alert, etc. Sit her in highchair and bib her up - if you wanto puree stuff, offer pureed carrot or something like that. Apple, mashed banana, sweet potato....lots of things.

then increase meals as you see fit, adding in lumps fairly soon.

Really though, they cope with BLW brilliantly.

I recommend starting early in the day. They're awake and chirpy. Never start off with a tired baby - that way lies disaster. Also, in the unlikely event of something disagreeing with them then you hopefully won't have disturbed nights with tummy aches.

Oh, and another fan of BLW here.

Ok, thanks.

What food should I start off with d'you reckon?

Sorry, just seen you said carrot.

Do I just give that the same time every day? Or something else.

Hi, we started two weeks ago. I initially gave baby rice with breast milk once a day, at lunchtime, and not even every single consecutive day.

Then moved on to purees - parsnip, pear and carrot. Sometimes mixed with a little baby rice, sometimes on its own (with a little breastmilk or formula). I'm now doing this for two meals a day. Both after breastmilk feeds, since that is still their most important source of nutrition.

I also tried mashed avocado a couple of times but that didn't go down well (nor did the carrot). Tried mashed banana too the other day but not much interest.

Finally, yesterday I introduced plain yogurt and that was a huge hit.

Try going to the Annabel Karmel site to get some ideas, or get her book - 100 purees. very helpful.

we haven't tried finger foods yet but will do ...

have fun. It's messy but cool to see babes moving on ...

Hi... not sure if this thread is still active, but just thought I'd add some other ideas about first foods:
--sweet potato
--swede
--butternut squash
--carrot (tread carefully with carrot though! my DS had a bit of reaction to it first time... he became extremely hyper . Not sure if it was because of the carrot, but thought I'd mention it).
--parsnip
--courgette
--green beans
--initially apple, pear & then papaya, peach, plum, prunes etc

Basically I agree with Chandellina, it's good to establish foods at lunchtime & then move them to supper when you're sure your baby doesn't have a reaction.

Hope this helps.

Most experts recomment start feeding once a day when your baby is in an alert interested mood and not too hungry but not too full either you will know the best time for you.

I do a mix of BLW and mushy stuff, started at 6mo pure BLW and introduced alot of tastes but DD didn't like many foods was getting worried so at 7mo tried some plum super porridge (didn't try any baby rice most people I know who tried it said their DC hated it!) mixed with milk and she loved it. Now 8mo and getting into new tastes and eats a mix of finger food and puree and has not choked once.

It's not easy and you just have to try not to rush it. Don't make too much food to start with as that can be frustrating as alot gets wasted. It will seem as though they are not eating anything for ages then poof one day they suddenly twig on to the whole eating thing and start munching and thats the most wonderful sight in the world!
