Have started a week ago with pureed carottes. He won't even let in his mouth, he closes his eys and spits it out. I've tried apple compote and it's the same. I have bought jars to see if that would make a difference. Nope!
The CM said she has never seen a child so young spits his food like this. He's bound to start eating at some point, isn't he? He's 80% BF and a big baby (18 pounds).

dd2 refused all solids until she was 12 months, she's a very healthy 6 year old now.

Have you tried BLW (baby led weaning), so fingerfood instead of purees?

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 01/02/2009 20:19

DS was exactly the same - refused purees completely and spat everything out.

We did BLW which meant he went at his own pace. He probably didn't really take to eating solids consistently until he was around 9 or 10 months - he's now a happy healthy nearly 3 year old who eats anything and everything.

They don't need solids for nutrition until they're nearly one, you've got a whole six months to get him into the idea, so just take it at his own pace

I wouldn't worry - when DD started as much food went on her face and round the room as in her! Just try little bits - he's only at the very very start of weaning and doesn't need food yet IYSWIM - milk is his main source of sustenance and will be for some time yet. Try different things, be prepared for lots of spitting out, and keep it all very light and unstressed. If doesn't want any, doesn't matter, just offer something again at next meal. He will learn what to do - my DD is 10 months now and eats and eats and eats! You could try letting him have a play with it with his fingers first so he can put some in his mouth?

Good luck! I love the weaning thing - is so lovely seeing their little faces when they really like something and 'get' how to eat it.

I wasn't planning to, as DD who has just turned 2 is a fantastic eater and we started her on purees. But I might give it a go. He does look at my food and starts to grab things.

Sorry was answering emkana but was too slow! I will read up on BLW and give it a go. Nothing to lose!

What is 27 weeks - roughly 6 months? DS1 wasn't remotely interested in solids until 8 months, and wasn't eating anything you could call a 'meal' until later still. Some children just aren't ready. I know it's irritating when you're preparing stuff and he's refusing it, but try to keep calm and continue to offer - sooner or later he'll decide that this eating lark is more fun than he first thought.

ChasingSquirrels · 01/02/2009 20:34

I started ds2 with food at around 24/25 weeks. He didn't really eat properly (with interest and of his own accord) until he was about 10/12 months.
He is now 3 and eats just fine.

Breizhette · 01/02/2009 20:44

OK. Seems pretty normal then!

Certainly within 'normal' range! I told my GP about it at the eight-month check, and he just said to be guided by my baby and not to worry at all.
