Just started weaning 3 weeks ago, all going well. Stretched him to 4 hourly feeds so effectively dropped a breast feed. What can I give him to drink in a bottle? Can he have juice and water or just water? Do I boil and cool it? HV a bit vague!

Not juice - think of his poor teeth Would give him boiled/cooled water in a sterilised beaker/bottle.

Just water will do fine.

MrsJamin · 29/01/2009 11:54

don't need to boil/cool water or sterilise anything, just tap water is fine.

I wouldn't bother with a bottle. We started giving tap water in a Tommee Tippee cup at six months with one or two meals a day. I'd hold it a bit, so he knew what it was for, and he'd have a go at holding it too. It took six weeks, but he drinks from it confidently now, and he has control over it just like bf.

offer tap water in a beaker but don't expect her to get the hang of it yet

My DS was weaned at 4 months only had water and milk until 8 months then I added a tiny an I mean tny dash of apple juice to hs water at lunch just for a bit of a different flavour. My HV said this was okay as it helped him get used to differe won't do him any hrm.nt flavours, I couldn't taste it but he could. As I said though a tiny bit once a day

Agree about the litle flip top TT cups they are fab can be a bit messy though

I offered DD water in a beaker from 6 months. She didn't drink much but I just stuck with it as they don't really need the water as such. Their milk provides enough fluids, it's more for getting used to the flavour and using the cup. She now drinks loads of water.
