we are on day 5 of weaning, and have so far had pear puree 4 days (spat out all but yesterday when ate all and then sicked all back up ten minutes later), carrot puree (took a little this morning then sicked up all, mostly over my white T-shirt!!) and baby rice (will now eat after 6 or so attempts woo hoo!). I'm happy to keep trying, next on the list is apple puree, but not sure if I should persist or take her lack of interest in purees as evidence that she is too young to wean. Any advice gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

Hi katherine, tried my dd with baby rice at 21 weeks, on doctors advice as she went very very fussy while feeding and wasnt taking a lot. Needless to say she was not ready, pshing it back out with her tongue, crying after it with what proabaly was a stomach upset, sicking up, so went with my instincts and didnt give it to her again. I waited til 26 weeks which was a week ago, and it was a whole different story, shes reaching out for food, having tantrums for food im eating, and really enjoys the experience. I can definately tell she needs food now and is ready for it. They take such small amounts when their younger with solids i dont think theres any point. Dd started off her first meal, with a big bowlful of oats and ripe pear mash, ate all that, then offered her a whole banana, she polished that off. She then was squeaking after my toast, so gave her a slice of that, followed by another full feed. I thought she'd just have a couple of spoonfuls!! I think its just easier when their older, as well as preserving their health. Best of luck!!

I tried with my ds early as he was having loads of milk and was big and at the time, I thought he needed something more, after 2 days of giving baby rice, I stopped, he clearly didn't want it, it was just me worrying too much.
I then tried again at 23/24 weeks under advice from HV, he still hated babyrice (but that's because it's foul) but took to everything else really well.
Tbh, I wouldn't be in a huge rush to do it now, leave it a few weeks and try again.
FWIW, I gave my ds a weaning spoon to 'play' with from about 10 weeks (under supervision) and he took to food really well when he was ready. All my friends struggled a bit with it, and no one else gave the spoon beforehand, wonder if it made a difference? Just a thought...

thank you both, I can't wait for her to want to eat and to have fun with it.. but as everyone has pointed out, we have a while to go yet. oddly she has been cutting down on her milk lately - maybe the end of a growth spurt? will try the spoon in a week or so (under supervision!) sounds like a good idea.

BikeRunSki, you think your mum is bad, yesterday I had to stop DS's (5.5m) great nan feeding him apple pie and cream! She couldn't understand why I was slightly unhappy!

I waited until 24 weeks, despite people, namely my Mum constantly asking every five minutes from DS being 12 weeks "when are you weaning him? Why don't you put rusk in his bottle?". He took to it beautifully and really enjoys it, we are now 4 weeks on and I am so glad I waited. Can I ask why you decided to do it earlier?
