Do you BLWs give your babies oven chips??

fadingfast · 23/01/2009 23:10

I am not doing hardcore BLW but my 9mo dd does love feeding herself and I try to give her plenty of finger foods. Today in desperation I gave her a couple of my 4yo ds's oven chips, which she loved (along with lots of little peas!).

Is this a really bad thing to have done? I only cook them once a week or so, and aren't they only potato and sunflower oil so is this really any worse than home made potato wedges?

Just wondering if I have done a Bad Thing.

It's not bad per se, but not the most healthy choice because oven chips tend to be high is saturated fats (bad mummy) and stabilisers. Depends what brand.

But then we live in the real world and actually sometimes it doesn't matter if 90% of the food is excellent and 10% is 'fun food' (unless you are actually feeding salted peanut, McDonalds and carnation milk smoothies with extra lard).

whomovedmychocolate · 23/01/2009 23:15

NB some might say home made wedges are worse because people tend to put salt on them to crisp them!

IAmTheNewQueenOfMN · 23/01/2009 23:18

outside of the 'judgey, has to be organic, fat free world of mn......
of course oven chips are ok soemtimes
theyare full of saturated fats but small children burn alot of fat as they aregrowing so much

as long as its not three times a day
it really does not matter

paddingtonbore · 23/01/2009 23:20

Hmmm.....

not sure what brands you are buying, but my sainsburys basics oven chips contain potatoes, veg oil and nowt else. no saturated fat there.

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/01/2009 23:20

McCain oven chips are potato and sunflower oil and nothing else - less than 5% fat. And if you buy the Rustic ones, the fat content is lower. So how can that be bad for them?

And children need fat to grow/develop, so how can they be bad for them?

paddingtonbore · 23/01/2009 23:23

methinks it is the fact that they are considered a bit declasse that puts most MNers off, rather than the fat issue .

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/01/2009 23:24

And I suspect, paddingtonbore, that many MNetters don't even bother to read the ingredients panel but just make certain assumptions!

whomovedmychocolate · 23/01/2009 23:25

You see I have no idea what is in them because I've bought into this 'they are processed therefore they must be full of crap' mentality .

I eat butter and I don't care.

paddingtonbore · 23/01/2009 23:27

I eat butter too...

on my oven-chip butties

whomovedmychocolate · 23/01/2009 23:28

God I haven't had a chip butty in yonks!

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/01/2009 23:28

Well - yes, they are processed, in that they take potatoes and turn them into chips, and then freeze them for you to cook!

Processing is not always a bad thing.

McCain Oven Chips - potatoes, sunflower oil and nothing else. What's wrong with that?!

whomovedmychocolate · 23/01/2009 23:30

BIWI - you're right I don't read the ingredients panels of foods I don't buy. I doubt many people do (except to shudder in horror and run from the sausage aisle) .

But it's an interesting point - some foods which are assumed to be bad for you are probably not that bad when compared to the highly refined, artificial sweetened shite we regularly scarf in the name of healthy eating.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/01/2009 23:32

I like my chips deep fried. On the rare occasions I eat them I do like them to be double fried to give a proper crispiness. Beef dripping is best I recall, but then I haven't had any since 2000.

MauriceDancer · 23/01/2009 23:33

i don't really like them, so no. but i did give her chips in restaurants etc and god knows what was in them. there is a weird coating on oven chips, i think, even if it is just sunflower oil i think it tastes horrible.

for really quick wedges i pre-bake in the micro then chop and oil and do them in the oven.

EachPeachPearMum · 23/01/2009 23:52

Did you know Tesco do organic oven chips?
Obviously didn't research their market, as they were selling them off at 10p per bag last time I went!
I got 2 packs have been great for quick dinners.

fadingfast · 24/01/2009 21:49

Well the oven chips I had cooked were McCain and seemed to be just sunflower oil and potato.

Today I did the proper, wholesome mummy thing and cooked sweet potato and normal potato in olive oil which were happily consumed but much more greasy than the oven chips.

I give them oven chips wedges and sweet potato chunks, all pre prepared from sainsburys with minimal additives and extras however, they mostly eat pasta and rice

CherryChoc · 04/02/2009 21:40

Aitch has got a recipe for chips on her blog, I don't like oven chips so may try them.
