How quickly to move to 3 meals a day?

Ds is 6 months tomorrow, and we've been giving him tasters of some fruit and veg over the last fortnight - some pureed and some finger foods. He has enjoyed it all and we've had some interesting nappies!
Last night he had a little bit of our dinner - chicken in tomato sauce with pasta - and that went down brilliantly. And then - OMG!!!! - he slept all night! This could be a fluke though so I'm not getting excited yet

So, my question is really how quickly to go from here. I don't want to just be feeding him solid food randomly, for some reason although I've BF'd entirely on demand and will continue to do so, I feel that I want him to have 'mealtimes'. Does anyone have any tips on how this works alongside breastfeeding on demand?
Also, can I just leap in and start giving him three meals a day or do I need to work up to it?

You can just offer him a bit of food when you have breakfast lunch and supper. I woudn't be too hung up about "three meals. He'll want to eat different amounts on different days and the volume will change over time (it doesn't always go up!). As he gets older he may want four or five small meals rather than three big ones, for example. He'll let you know!

Just offer food when you are eating and carry on breastfeeding as normal. I breastfed both of mine on demand throughout the whole solids phase and they were very clear on the difference between solids and milk . DS1 didn't really do breakfast until he was well over one. DS2 demanded either milk or solids every hour and a half until about 18 months. He's very small, wiry and active and it's how he needed to eat.

Thanks - I'm probably being a bit PFB about it all but it feels like starting all over again when I've just got the hang of this parenting thing

Getting the hang after six months? Blimey, I'm still in the dark after five . It'll be fine, it'll be fine.

Just chuck him some of your food when you sit down to eat. If he wants it, great, if not, don't worry.

Tis easy if you think about it that way - plus a bit of fruit/breadstick at morning coffee and afternoon tea when you would have a biccie

[wonders how CMOTD knows about her biscuit habit^]

Thanks everyone, I know I'm being a bit daft

sleepycat DS slept through last night, well from midnight until 7am, which is longer than he has gone since he was 18 weeks old! Long may it continue......
