Seasoning in baby food?

RinkyDinkyPinky · 20/01/2009 14:32

Can I use herbs in baby's food? We often cook using oregano, parsley, basil and thyme, as well as mint and chives. Are these OK for baby to have in small quantities as flavouring in sauces?

It would be nice to puree or mouli some of the food that DH and I enjoy- obviously without the salt.
Also is pepper OK for her to have in cooking too?

Sorry DD is 7 months old and seems to hate bland stuff like baby rice/ porridge- not surprised really!

Also is garlic OK too?

Sorry lots of questions!

herbs are absolutely fine and gives opportunity for baby to have different flavours. also, if you normally cook with herbs, your dd will grow more accustomed to this.

i think garlic is fine too.

not sure about pepper, i didn't really give pepper as i wasn't sure either!

We did BLW so DD has always had all the same seasonings as us (I just stopped adding salt when cooking). Pepper is fine, DD is a great fan of anything a little spicy.

If your DD is/was BF she will be used to a wide range of flavours (from what you have eaten) anyway.

Thanks. DD has been BF so that's prob why she likes a good variety of flavours.

Yes! Go for it! My DS is nearly 8 months and seems to like everything too!

jkklpu · 20/01/2009 19:37

Definitely. I seem to remember that there's all kinds of research suggesting that children who are introduced to complex flavours early are much less likely to have eating problems later on and to eat more healthily. Also, bf babies whose mothers have exciting diets are exposed to more variety before weaning, too. Not sure whether it's all causal, but certainly supports giving tasty food to wee ones. My 2 ds love garlic...

try anything and everything. DS1 eats what we do. i never use any salt in my cooking anyway and he loves pepper, all herbs, garlic (inc garlic bread). he likes chilli in small quantities and likes mild curry. I have also heard that children who try complex flavours early are less likely to be fussy later on.

DD eats all spices as well as garlic and pepper and has since 6 months. She doesn't really like bland flavours. Salt's the only thing I leave out.

Habbibu · 21/01/2009 20:49

Yes, anything except salt. DD is 2, and likes grainy mustard, olives, chilli sauce, curry, pasta puttanesca - the works. She was BLWed too, and always just ate what we did, so your plan sounds just right.
