look at the post above about what to feed an 11 month old - i've just posted loads on there.

littleducks · 18/01/2009 13:04

thanks, i have looked but im more worried about trying to balance out foods across the week with enough of each thing each day

i was much more relaxed with dd but ds isnt a happy soul atm so i wanted to trial a week of food all sorted to see if it helped

What do you eat yourselves in the evening? Can you not just make it no-salt and save a bit to reheat the next day for lunch? That's what we tend to do, otherwise I struggle to find things to eat.

I also batch make a bunch of stuff for the freezer for DD so if something's not suitable I can give her something.

So have fishcakes, lentil croquettes, turkey & apple patties, meatballs, homemade fish fingers, chicken strips.

I sometimes also make a baked omlette, which is a variant of this.

Sometimes I'll also throw in some tinned tuna to pasta sauce or toasted pita if I think I need to offer more protein.

Get some frozen mixed veg and some different types of pasta - shapes and what they are made of... I rotate through wheat, corn and the green one.

Not sure is this is helping, but I hope there are some ideas in here for you.

tumtumtetum · 18/01/2009 13:43

I don't really do menu planning but when DD was 9mo she had what we had - I don't cook with salt anyway so it was fine.

In a typical week for evenings we have something like:

roast 1 day
leftovers and salad next
big spag bol or stew or pie
and again!
some kind of chop/steak/fish & spud & veg
erm probably the other 2 days random bits and pieces

My point is the baby doesn't need anything special, some of what you are having will be fine, and it will be nice for you to widen the range of what you have as well (from the look of the list above we need to do this too!).

If you are not a veggie then protein is easily come by in meat.

ChairmumMiaow · 18/01/2009 13:45

Some ideas: (some will only work with a pincer grip!)

Spag bol - if they don't like spaghetti, other sorts of pasta, or bung the sauce on a rice cake.

Lamb and bean casserole with rice. DS loves this. He can eat the slow cooked meat and loves beans, and I make the rice sticky so he can eat it easily.

Jacket spud and beans. Spud cut into wedges.

I'm sure I could think of some more but I'm supposed to be doing the online shopping

ChairmumMiaow · 18/01/2009 13:47

The best advice I was given about feeding a baby was to make sure they got balanced meals over a week rather than a day. Some days DS seems to eat nothing but carbs, other days its veg all the way!

DDofaToxicMother · 19/01/2009 12:26

CMM - do you think that balancing out thing is ok for fruits and veggies too. They are meant to have 5 portions a day but are you saying that they could have say 3 portions one day and then 7 portions the next day.

Aitch · 19/01/2009 12:30

are little babies supposed to have 5 portions a day? that whole 5 portions thing is a load of government-sponsored guff imo. it was based on a greek study afaik that found that healthy people ate three portions a day (plus all that other lovely 'unhealthy' greek stuff) and from that govts across the globe extrapolated 'ooooh, five is better than three... so let's target our guys for five' and this has now translated as gospel.

Aitch · 19/01/2009 12:31

ps, to the OP, what do you eat? is it decent food (if not why not?), can you just not add salt to it and give some to the baby? meal plan for yourselves first, then see if the baby can eat it, imo.

ChairmumMiaow · 19/01/2009 12:32

DD - it works fine for us. Some days DS doesn't want as much fruit (and others he eats 3 satsumas and half an apple). some days we have a naughty day and don't sit down to meals properly so carbs and fruit are easier on the run. we just offer more fruit the next day!

DDofaToxicMother · 19/01/2009 12:32

A portion is meant to fit in the palm of your hand isn't it? So obviously for a baby a portion wouldn't be a whole banana or apple but perhaps a few slices? That's how I always interpreted it anyway.

ChairmumMiaow · 19/01/2009 12:33

more veg even

DDofaToxicMother · 19/01/2009 12:36

Also research says a lot of eating habits are learned very early so it is best to get babies into the habit of eating 5 portions a day. Obviously you shouldn't force them to have it but should encourage it. So offer it but if they aren't interested or reject it no biggy.

ChairmumMiaow · 19/01/2009 12:38

I don't worry about portion control. he gets offered the whole fruit and we eat the rest. if he wants more of a particular veg he points to his or our plates and can let us know which bit he wants more of !
He regulated his own food for 6 months and he's still doing fine

DDofaToxicMother · 19/01/2009 12:39

CMM - what I meant is a whole banana or apple would be more than 2 portions for a baby. So you wouldn't have to offer 5 whole pieces of fruit or veg to get the 5 a day in for a baby.

Aitch · 19/01/2009 12:39

yes, but it's just a habit, not a nutritional requirement. more fruit and veg is good for (most but not all) people, but i feel for mums who are totting up 5 things a day as if their lives depend on it. it's really just a govt target.
where is the research about habits, could you link if you can think where you saw it, i'd be interested to read it.

DDofaToxicMother · 19/01/2009 12:45

I don't know if it's the original research or good research or anything. I just found a few links on google so if they aren't very good forgive me
