What can I give DS for an evening meal that will help him get a good night's kip?

I'm wondering if my DS wakes in the first part of the night because he's having difficulty digesting his food. He was very farty last night when he first woke up!!

What's a good evening meal? Tonight he had some avocado mashed with some banana and some rusk. Last night he the same for dinner. He's had spinach, broccoli and potatoes for lunch.

Any suggestions? I've also posted under sleep. Thanks!

BTW, he's 7mo.

I think anything with carbs in helps. Try avocado with cous cous and philidelphia.
Also, it may be that a dream feed at around 10 may still be needed. Does he then go through to a decent hour?

Lulumama · 14/01/2009 18:09

he might be hungry ? he might well still need milk at night

SpacePuppy · 14/01/2009 18:10

at 7 months I would give him solids early like 4:30pm and a bottle for bedtime, milk digests quicker and should not give gas.

I just wanted to say that for my DD, how full her tummy was bore no relation whatsoever to how well she slept at night. Perhaps this isn't quite what you'd hoped to hear, but after I cottoned on to this, it meant that I just stressed about her (decidedly dodgy) sleep, rather than Food and sleep .

I didn't explain myself properly - I'm know he does often still need milk at night (am still BFing) and certainly after midnight he'll take a feed.

I don't want food to make him sleep more (well, obviously that would be nice - but that's not what I meant!!!), I simply meant that when he wakes an hour or two after having first gone to sleep he doesn't seem to want to feed, but he does seem uncomfortable and, as I said in the OP, rather farty!! However, when he wakes up much later he seems happier and just wants some milk.

I do have issues with night-feeding/BFing etc that appear on other threads etc, but this time I'm just thinking about food and fartiness!!

I like the idea of avocado and cous cous, but I'll have to leave the philly as DS has a dairy allergy (also featured in numerous other threads!!!),

SJM, if your DS has dairy allergy/intolerance have you considered that he could have wheat/gluten intolerance, or has this been tested? If he did, then rusk or couscous could cause gas - very common result, as it is body having difficulty digesting food. Also, have you started him on proteins yet - while carbs are good for sleep, none of the meals you've described contain protein, so wonder if adding a bit of fish or meat might help (think DS was having fish or meat at that age - pureed of course) - fwiw DS has dairy and egg intolerance, but he love fish from early age.
Sorry can't offer more suggestions, but am sure I'll be back lurking on threads like this when DC2 reaches weaning stage (still 9 weeks til dday though!).

Maybe have any brassicas at lunch, as these can upset some people. Can't remember if broccoli is off the top of my head but sprouts, cabbage, etc. can be farty.

Re. The Philly: you can get a substitute in health food shops, think it's made from soy. They keep it in the fridge and my DCs loved it mixed in tomato pasta sauce.

I agree with Paddington - sleep isn't necessarily related to food or lack of, but it's worth trying things that won't make him uncomfortable. What about porridge ? Oats are renowned for inducing sleep, and it's delicious with pureed apple or pear.
