I'm just starting to wean ds 22wks. i really don't want to but he just won't take his milk. he had tastes of fruit & veg last week but doesn't seem to want to take much. 7/8 spoonfulls. baby ceral went down better & so did the fruit. how much should he take? i'm scared of making him sick. do i really need to be pushing savory right now? mil says i shouldn't give any fruit or sweet stuff cos he'll never take savory. I also haven't had much success with my own purees. are jars really that bad?? i just wish he would take his milk then i could wait till he was older, like 18!!!!!!!

You can certainly wait until he's 26 weeks - it doesn't sound like either of you are enjoying it ...

Have you thought about Baby Led Weaning? (BLW)

TeenyTinyToria · 12/01/2009 08:52

Babies don't always eat much when they are first being weaned, so 7 or 8 spoonfuls sounds fine to me. I weaned my ds at 5 months rather than 6 months, and started off with banana, which he nibbled from a whole fruit.

Then I gave him tastes of stewed apple and pear, baby rice and pureed carrot and sweet potato. It's a good idea to try a wide range of tastes, but don't worry too much about the amount, as milk should still be your ds's main food. The main thing is just to introduce the idea of solid food to get your ds used to a wide range of tastes and textures.

i have thought about blw but i'm just worried about his weight right now. he only takes 3-4 each feed & sometimes isn't even taking half of what he should! when is it safe to give things like banana whole?? i didn't think u could do that till they're 6mths?

thats 3-4oz!!

Well obviously you don't leave them with it lol, I held the banana so I could make sure he wasn't biting off big chunks, just nibbling the amount I would have mashed anyway.

3-4 oz doesn't sound terrible - ds at the same age would sometimes take 6oz, and sometimes 3-4, occasionally 7 or 8. He never drank a full bottle.

Why not talk to your health visitor if you're concerned about his weight, and see if he's on the right track?

she's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard!!!!! i asked for her help when he was younger cos he wouldn't take his milk, it took her 2 weeks 2 get back 2 me!!!!!!! he's not loosing but he's gradually dropping a centile!

As other i would leave it until he's 26weeks.

I wean dd1 at 6mths (it was 4mths to wean when i had her) she used to take 9oz every feed and wasn't that interested in food and in fact i wished i waited longer with her.

With dd2 I weaned her at 20 wks because she wouldn't drink milk. It would take an hour of us both crying to get 4oz into her. I BLW with her and she loves her food, and still not keen on milk.

Just quick point not sure if it right, but i was told that a babies tummy is only the size of their fist.

lizziemun, when u say u blw dd2 did u do that at 20wks? if so, what with?!

I started with bits of carrots, rice cakes both plain and apple.

I also got a lot of advice from Aitch's blog here. I'm not sure if she still posts on here but you can get alot help from her blog.
