Fish and seafood for 9mo

I have a couple of questions on fish. My 9mo DS loves what he has had so far even more than meat (cod, seabass, trout, salmon) so I want to offer him different fish to try but have a few questions.

  1. Can I give him smoked fish? Is there a difference between 'raw' smoked fish like salmon and 'cooked' smoked fish like poached smoked haddock

  2. Is there a limit to how much fish I can give in a week? I understand big fish like tuna is limited due to mercury but are there any other guidelines?

  3. I know shellfish isn't allowed until he is older. What about things like squid and octopus which are neither fish nor shellfish?

Thanks!

shellfish is ok now as long as it is cooked. Certain fish are restricted like shark, swordfish and marlin due to the mercury content. There isnt as much of an issue with tuna.

There is more info here about limits on oily fish, etc

I think there definitely is an issue with mercury and tuna. In the US there are advisories on how much/what type women of childbearing age should eat. Here's a link to a Consumer Reports article (like Which, I think).

Thanks!

I had a look at some smoked fish in Sainsburys today - it seems the salt content rules it out for babies regardless of whether they could actually have it as it is all very high in salt.

Seona - have put that website under my favourites now you've answered two of my queries in one day using it Thanks!
