New BLWer - food suggestions for wheat/gluten free diet?

DS is 6.5 months and we started BLW at Christmas, so very early days, but it's going pretty well.
He has some digestive trouble and his paediatrician advised me to lay off wheat at least for the first few months. Which makes all those lovely ideas like pitta bread strips and pasta-from-my-plate not suitable right now.
He's trying stuff like banana, pear, carrot; experimenting with rice porridge from a loaded spoon - will be giving houmous and cream cheese a whirl too - but wondered if anyone had any wheat-free suggestions for me to try?
I want to avoid cooking stuff separately for him, but don't want to go bankrupt with buying gluten-free food for us all either . Have bought some rice cakes and corn pasta to try though....
Recipe or product suggestions v welcome!

Hi,

I was trying to think of what I would have given my lo at 6.5 months if I'd been avoiding wheat, especially thinking about what she could have managed, and really I think you'd be fine with plain old sticks of roast veg and soft/steamed fruit... for carbs potato wedges go down a treat here, and you could also make roast sweet potato chips (for mummy, they are amazing with ketchup!) My dd also loves green beans. You can roast squash, carrot, peppers, etc. Banana and ripe pear are fruit faves here. I mean, there are sooo many fruits and veg, there isn't really much need for other things for a while anyway... Butter beans a big hit here also, eaten individually, and you could make lentil or bean spreads for rice cakes. Can you give him oats? If so, you could make flapjacks or oat biscuits.. There are lots of good recipes here and here

At your lo's age, personally I didn't bother with recipes, I just offered a variety of fruit and veg sticks, as not much went in anyway, and she could only manage soft things like roast squash etc anyway.

Thanks pispirispis, have gone to look at the BLW forum and put sweet potato on the shopping list! Lentil/bean spread a v good idea - and you are quite right, sticking with the fruit and veg should be fine for a while. Am just over-enthusiastically trying to run before I can walk... he seems quite into different textures though (enjoys gumming meat and demolishing rice cakes).

We're not doing gluten free, but took introduction fairly steadily as my dad is coeliac, so did a lot of non-wheat things partic at the start.

My DS loves roasted sweet potato almost as much as pasta so I second pispirispis on that. Roasted root veg in general go down a treat - all sorts such as celeriac, swede, parsnips, carrot, beetroot, sweet potato, squash as well as normal spuds. They're a good way of getting carbs in which can be a bit trickier without bread/pasta.

I found breakfasts hardest without wheat.

You could try oatibix as cereal if oats are okay. Mush up with some milk into a big soggy glob. Messy, but adored by DS!

My DS loves loves loves baked fruit - about 4-5 chopped apples and pears plus whatever else I have to hand (e.g. blueberries, mangoes). Melt a good amount (about 50g) of unsalted butter and pour on top, throw in some ground cinnamon or ginger or mixed spice if you fancy, then bake until softened (about 30-45 mins). Then freeze or store in fridge, and just heat up for 30 secs in microwave to get the butter all runny and yummy again. Great for breakfast with a bit of thick yoghurt dolloped on top, or as pudding.
