Drinking and weaning.

I have just started giving my DS puree and he is loving it! Suddenly a much happier boy.

Just need to ask if it's ok for him to be getting all his liquids from my breast milk as I tried him with some water from a cup and he hated it!

I want to keep breastfeeding as long as possible so will this interfere if he drinks water too?

TIA

I'm interested in this too, just having started weaning DD, after exclusive bf, which I want to keep up ... what I have been doing is to keep up bfeeds as per usual, fit in the weaning meals inbetween & I have started to offer water with the meals (I am doing purees and BLW combined). I think the main thing is to make sure your bfing continues relatively as normal as they should be taking enough hydration from foremilk ...

Are you bfing immediately before/after the puree? I think, as long as you are continuing to offer bf, you should be okay.

I want to offer the experience of drinking a little water from Avent cup (have never had much success with expressing milk so want to introduce another means of taking a drink now).

DD was offered water from 6 months but drank nothing until 10 months when she had a tentative try. At 17 months she still doesn't drink loads but still bfs a lot so I don't worry. I definitely wouldn't worry at your dc's age, they've got plenty of time to get interested in water and bfing will still be enough.

Hiya Borg

I would keep going with trying with the water. I am bfing my dd and worried about this when I started weaning her. She has refused to take a bottle since around 3 months so I didn't know how I would ever get her to drink water.

I offered her water from a Tommy Tippee sippee cup at every meal and basically just shook it slightly into her mouth so that a few tiny drops of water came out. It was like this for a couple of weeks, with her refusing to suck the spout. During this time I made sure she was getting plenty of breast milk and was eating enough fruit to stop her getting constipated.

About a week ago I came down to see my dp holding the cup to her mouth while she happily chugged water from it He had no idea she had never done it before and was very pleased with himself! Ever since that morning she has happily taken water and is even getting to the point where she can almost hold the cup herself. I tell her Im giving her water every time I offer it to her in the hope she will begin to understand what it is and what it is for... this seems to be working.

As Im still in the very early stages of BLW (dd is nearly 7 months) Im still bfing quite a bit and her drinking water hasn't changed this.

HTH!
