DD is 6 months next week. Since she was 5.5 months, I've given her a few spoonfuls of baby rice each night, which she has enjoyed. I don't think she swallows much but I am guessing that is nothing to worry about and that it will come in time.

Last night I decided to start feeding her something other than rice and pureed some carrots. She took a small amount but hated the taste so much she wretched and made herself sick. I tried rice again this morning and she seemed less keen than normal. I've read that it takes an average of 17 attempts before a new food is accepted but I'm not sure what to do with the carrots - should I continue offering her it for a few more nights or move on to something else? The last thing I want is to put her off trying other foods when she has been doing so well.

The other thing I'm wondering is when and how should I introduce a cup?

Thanks

I introduced a new food every three days and then as there were 2,3,4 new tastes I mixed them up. Baby rice is great to make things less strong or thicken if too runny.

IMO and IME it is easier to get rid of bottles at 6/7 months than later. You could try a cup now for water with lunch for example. HTH.

try a doidy cup definately not nospill though!

You could add a little carrot to the baby rice to introduce the flavour in a more mild form and then gradually increase the proportion of carrot in the mix until you remove the baby rice. Or try something like butternut squash instead of carrot and then come back to carrot in a few days. Like NAB3lovelychildren we introduced a new food every three days at lunchtime and moved the old food to teatime.

Do I have to give DD cooled boiled water at 6 months - when can I give water straight from the tap?

I'll try mixing the carrot with baby rice, good suggestion, thanks.

Mine had tap water from 12 months

ChrismumMiaow · 31/12/2008 16:11

You can give tap water from 6 months. You can also offer finger foods alongside your puree from 6 months.

My son's 6 month birthday - roast dinner

nappyaddict · 31/12/2008 16:36

Yes you can give tap water now.

Chrismum that is brilliant! I am going to give my dd some toast tomorrow and hope she is as good as your lo with BLW - She is puree weaned and 6.5 months now.

Benji - Dd had baby rice at 6 months and then I moved onto carrot straight away. After a few days she loved it. Now she gags on baby rice!! She also loves Hipp creamy porridge. I often put some pureed fruit with it to make it different.

Keep trying. I also gave dd the spoon to play with a chew on so that she was comfortable with it.

Dd wont drink water so we dilute baby juice for her in a Mam trainer cup. She doesnt have much but now she is having 2 full meals a day she only has 4 6oz bottle of milk and a very small amount of juice.

MrsJamin · 31/12/2008 23:00

and of course you don't have to give baby rice or puree at all!

ChrismumMiaow · 31/12/2008 23:09

DS has never had puree. Well the closest thing he has had is vegetable soup but he generally drinks it out of a doidy cup, which he now uses without help (not with water though, too easy to splash!)

You have to be prepared for them not to eat much if they don't want it. DS was perfectly capable of eating (as the video shows!) from day 1, but he didn't really eat in quantity regularly until about 10 months (but he really seems to have got the hang, and at 11mo is starting to drop some daytime BFs as I wait for him to ask now (he was biting when he didn't really want it!))

My advice is just to have fun with it all. If you can let them continue to regulate their own apetite as they have with their milk, and not worry about the mess, you'll all have fun!

DS is on 3 meals a day at 5.5months and STILL ridiculously hungry, waking in the night for a feed etc, he is also taking 35ml of milk every day, any advice on how to fill this bottomless pit, I have a horrible feeling he is just going to be exactly like my DH who is also constantly "starving"!!!

MrsJamin · 05/01/2009 12:50

kezkawai, how much milk did you say your DS has?! Do you mean oz or ml?

kezkawai · 06/01/2009 09:45

ooops yeah oz
