What is your 11/12 months old eating?????????

My DS will be a year on the 10th Jan and im interested to know what other 1 year olds are eating and how?

My DS is being spoon fed no probs, and if having a good day will eat food thats been mashed instead of slightly blended. He will eat finger food, but to be honest i havent been brave enough to let him loose on anything to messy as i cant handle mess, but since a throat infection he doesnt have as much enthusiam for finger food as he did!

Just would like to know whether we are at the right point with food??

I am at the same stage as you (and my twins are twins with your DS! - same bday!). They eat "normal" food but always mashed or blended (depending on what it is).

They ate a tiny bit of DS1's spaghetti tonight, but were unsure about it. They are ok with lumps, and also ok with eating finger foods like whole banana, breadsticks, bits of pear, avocado etc. Also ok with toast.

Was just thinking today we need to branch out so things are a bit more like a "real" meal rather than a mush of everything together.

At the mo they eat mainly fish or chicken or beans with potato and veg.

Egg- Are you twins showing any interest in using the spoon yet coz my DS hasnt?

My dd is 11 months and pretty much where yours are, which I am relieved about. Dd can use the spoon if I guide her and she likes it but if I give it to her it just gets waved around. I too am a coward when it comes to mess and more so to waste. Need to be more adventurous.

DD will eat strips of chicken and sticks of cheese too.

LaTurkey · 16/12/2008 19:23

Oh. I am a bit shy of being adventurous because I was for a week and DD stopped eating! This was a few months ago though.

didsnbump · 16/12/2008 19:53

My DS was good with finger food, and will eat most veg, meat, bread, cheese, fruit, cucumber, tomatos and bisuits, bacically anything i give him, i just darent let him at meals like spag bol with his hands as i know what a mess he will make.

I just feel like he is growing up so well but yet is still being fed like he was six months ago just thinker and lumpyer!!

I wonder where we all go from here then. Do they just pick up the spoon one day and eat????

My 11 and half MO DS is eating what we eat - just with his hands. I can't think of anything I wouldn't give him (sugar and salt level depending). Plus he only has a bit of cow's milk at the end of the day as I've just given up BFing, so he's getting all his nutrition and energy from food now. We've done BLW (baby-led weaning) from the start and to be honest I put DS's good eating skills & appetite down to that.

Babies are messy, at some point you need to let them feed themselves and stand well back! They'll only learn to eat a wide variety of foods if they have control over what they eat with independence. Next step for us is cutlery and eating from a plate rather than a mat, DS will feed himself from a loaded spoon but needs to work out how to load it up himself.

Hi MrsJamin,

So when u say he eats what u eat, what kind of meals, and how.

Do u put it in a bowl?

I dont mind when we are having meat and veg meals as he can have it all and pick it up himself, i just leave off the sauce/gravy. But how do ya get on with spag bol, mash potato, casseroles and things that are very soft?

My ds has what we eat but mostly spoon fed, unless its sandwichs or stuff like that!

Chilli and saltless versions of our food, stuff like cottage pie, chicken/beef/venison stews, poached fish or fish pie, cauliflower cheese, tagine, pasta and sauce etc. We use a combination of spoon feeding and her eating with her hands. She has three meals a day plus two pretty substantial snacks which she feeds herself (e.g. humous and veg sticks, hard boiled egg, fruit, cherry tomatoes, toast and cream cheese). And she still has a 2-3 BF a day. She's 11mths.

She messes about with a spoon and occasionally manages to feed herself a spoonful, but more by luck than judgment.

spag bol, mash potato, & casseroles are some of DS's faves! It's fascinating that he's learnt how to handle some food e.g. mash so that he picks it up without it squishing between his fingers, and he just eats out of his palm. It's actually best reheated as it's gone a bit more solid than when it's been just mashed. of course it's messy but I just remind myself that I want to do my best to get a non-fussy child in the future.
I don't put it in a bowl, I just put it on his table mat (wipe-clean obviously).

NattyTurkeyAndEggnog · 17/12/2008 12:51

my son was eating mostly mashed with a fork versions of our food, and my daughter was eating exactly the same as us at 12months. i find in general boys find lumps harder, at least it was the case with both mine and my friends babies.

didsnbump · 17/12/2008 13:09

Well im now off to stay with family for 4 weeks as i live overseas and DH is away, so prob not the best time to start letting him have a go himself, but as soon as i get back in Jan i will have to give it ago and see what happens.

Do u find food gets everywhere as my only concern is my home is very small and at the mo the highchair is sat very close to a wall and radiator, a set of shelves my dining table and sofa.
I could move it into the kitchen, but again its a very small kitchen so not easy!

Another question to you all.

What are your LO's drinking fluid wise in a day?
My DS will have between 4-6 oz when he gets up, and the same at bed time. During the day though somedays will only drink 3-4oz of water. I have tried giving him cows milk in a cup to drink in the afternoons but he wont drink it, but if i put it in a bottle he will.
Im concerned he isnt drinking enough, what are others doing??

Well i tried cows milk in a bottle this afternoon and he took one sip and refused it. How am i gonna make the transition if he is gonna fefuse it, or will it be different in the morning as he is hungry/thirsty?

we've just started on cow's milk - it is quite hit and miss, sometimes he glugs it from his sippy cup, sometimes not. I can't seem to get the temperature right either.

LaTurkey · 19/12/2008 10:08

I wouldn't read too much in to one refusal. Does he take anything else from a bottle? Try a cup? HAve a glass yourself and get him interested - then let him drink from the same cup - This always works with DD! At least for a try.

LaTurkey · 19/12/2008 10:09

Maybe it was too cold if it was straight from the fridge?
