when will ds learn to bite bits off big lumps of food?

ds, 10mo, is (finally!) enjoying his food. but he enjoys it so much that he puts whatever he can get his hands on into his mouth all at once, resulting in much gagging/vomiting. if I hold, say, a piece of toast, he can bite a bit off (he has 6 front teeth). but if I hand it to him, the whole thing goes in. spoon feeding is SO boring (for both of us), and I like letting him feed himself, but today I cut a cheese sandwich into 60 pieces after 20 piece sizes still too big! when will he learn?

DS (21mo) is still like this with finger foods. He would shove half a banana in his mouth if allowed. So I still have to chop stuff up into bite-sized pieces!

oh no! we're going to have to feed mush for another year?

I know it's hard but you have to let him gag, he IS NOT choking, there is a difference. Your baby is just getting to grips with food that is different, in size and texture. Its like us when we try something new, it's difficult at first.

Our daughter is 11 months and eats like a savage, she often gags on banana as she can't seem to get enough down her gullet.

don't give things too hard, sounds like you are doing everything right. A sandwich sounds fine. My daughter loves pasta, a roast dinner, chopped up, snadwiches, she eats what we eat.

Persevere. There is no reason to give your baby pureeed food.

gagging is fine. doesn't bother me much, and ds not bothered at all (though dp hates it). but gagging followed by vomiting (sometimes most of whatever meal he's just eaten) does. he's never had purees, and I used to give bigger bits of food, but recently have been making them smaller in the hope of stopping the vomiting. perhaps I should go back to bigger bits and just grit my teeth while he learns?

Apologies, I didnt realised he vomits, I should have READ the post and not skimmed . I would gradually get bigger and bigger with the peices. Other than that I would probably ask GP's advice. If it continues. He might ust be a dainty eater.

I shovel massive forkfuls in, yet DP eats tiny peices of food from his fork.

Sorry no more to add

No, I don't mean give mush! But when feeding stuff like banana, bagel etc I only give him as much as I know he can chew at one time!

MamaChris · 13/12/2008 22:07

he is so NOT a dainty eater lol! think that's part of the problem!

sorry - mush not what I meant, but sometimes I have to cut the bits of food so small it's just as much hassle as mush, iykwim.

I'm probably just too impatient (or greedy!). I want to be able to hand ds his own banana while I eat my own...
