DD 7.5 mths won't drink milk but will eat loads of solids. What to do?

DD2 (like DD1) loves her solid food but acts like I'm torturing her when I bring out her bottle of milk. She is on 3 meals a day and will happily put away large quantities of anything and everything offered. I try to cram in as much milk as possible in the form of porridge/rice pudding/yoghurt. She drinks a bit of water with her meals.

But today she drank only 8ozs of milk. I am aware that she is supposed to be consuming at least 17ozs. She will drink between 1 and 3ozs at each sitting then start screaming when I put the bottle near her. She has always been a bit tricky to bottlefeed, but today is a new low of milk consumption. DD1 was BF so I couldn't see how little she was drinking (she was also a screamy feeder), so I didn't worry as much.

Should I just go with the flow and forget the milk? I think teething might be a contributing factor so things could get better. I'm just so fed up of battling with her at each milk feed.

what about changing from a bottle to a no spill cup?

baltimore97 · 12/12/2008 22:02

Is a no spill cup one of those sippy cups with a valve? I had thought of ditching the bottle, but wondered whether anyone had actually had any success with that.

DD2 (7 months) is BF, but is similarly disinterested in milk feeds. I'm just going with her demands. She'll be getting plenty fluid in the "solid" food and occasionally goes for it! If she is getting plenty calcium etc in other foods, I'd try not to worry. As you say, it could be teething.

You could get her a cup that spills - my son had to come off his bottle at eight months for medical reasons and we got him a cup with a lid - it wasnt spill proof so we had to watch him when he was drinking it. we struggled to find one that did spill though and ended up getting cheap ones from a pound shop. we also managed to get some where the lids turned round and you controlled the amount of water that came out of them.

Hi all,

Am 'bumping' this topic back up as I am having the same problem. My 7 month old will only take about 8 oz a milk a day now but is fine with solids. I've tried every baby cup known to man and he just isn't interested. The other problem I have is that he will not take any yogurt or cheese so the only calcium I can get in him is from the cow and gate baby cereals which have powdered milk in them.

Any one else got any bright ideas? Should I get him some vitamin drops?

Thanks for your help.

Hi. My dd is now 8mths and has been on solids since 25wks. She still has one BF each day but her milk intake went way down. She was never a big milk drinker anyway but she loves eating!

It is only in the past week that she has been having a bit more milk. I add formula to her cereal in the morning (2-3 oz) and 1oz to whatever she has for dinner. She does eat cheese and yoghurt so I don't have that problem. Can you add extra formula to everything he eats? Will he eat cheese if you have cooked with it? I make mashed potato with cheese and full fat milk. If he will eat cheese in cooking then I would just make some meals with full fat milk and cheese.

DD now 8.5mths and still hopeless at drinking milk! Oatcake - I make pasta sauces with cheese in, i.e. tomato and veggie sauce with Philadelphia stirred in or just cheese sauce, which I serve with pasta and broccoli. DD eats both very happily. She still won't drink much milk, but she has something dairy at every meal, so I'm not getting too worried.

I also have the same problem with my dd and have done for quite a few weeks nw.

What i have started doing is any milk she leaves over i mix as much as i can with her cereal and veggie/fruit purees.
I can get away with putting 2ozs in her cereal and an oz in all her other meals.

Ive tried all the usualls, changed teat flow and milks but no difference.

Hi all,
My 9 month old has been fantastic at eating and having 4 BF a day until a month ago when she just doesnt want milk. Shes now down to 2 BF with some for breakfast. I am lucky if she has 4 oz a time. She gets to 3oz then screams if I try and give her more. Still sleeping ok so dont think shes hungry but its a worry. Other than cereal dont want to add milk to food as meant to be trying to get more solid with lumps so at a loss what to do. She has yogurts but not keen on cheese. Might try the cup advice given earlier but any other tips welcome. Nice to know Im not alone.

Hi folks,

Just come back to say that my DS has started drinking milk again. So I'm none the wiser why he stopped 2 weeks ago and none the wiser as to why he suddenly started liking it again yesterday. Long may it continue!

DD1, 9.5 months, has stopped drinking milk during the day, prefering to drink it through the night instead it seems. Argh! What to do? She has 3-4 oz for breakfast and again at 3pm, I add milk to everything I can. She won't drink anything before bed any more and now wakes twice in the night to drink 3-4 more oz per feed. Have tried to push dinner earlier but that didn't make any difference, have added a snack mid-morning but all that did was put her off her lunch. Any thoughts?

Do you offer milk before solids? If you give solids first she may be too full for the milk.

Don't forget you can add milk to pasta sauces, mince, mashed potato etc. Also add cheese to everything for the calcium.
