DTs are 29w tomorrow. DT1 is a real guzzler and will eat pretty much anything.

DT2 is challenge. She won't spoonfeed - full stop. Clamps her lips shut and turns her head to the side. She is, however, happy to suck on toast, brocolli, batons of carrot etc. She eats absolutely teeny amounts ... tmi but her poo's are very much breastmilk poos whereas her sister's are ... well, you can guess .

So, what do I feed her on? She is breastfeeding as normal but is a petit little lady and hovers around the 9th centile so I really don't want her dropping from there. It doesn't feel like she gets anything, let alone enough, from what she sucks on. I've read old threads and know that she ought to be okay with mainly milk until 12 mths but I'd like to offer her some variety of finger foods and would really appreciate any suggestions and advice.

TIA

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along in a minute but dd's favourite finger foods are;
potato cakes spread with Philidelphia
Crumpets
Cucumber
Roasted butternut squash fingers
the usual fruit and vegetables really. IMO they don't 'eat' huge ammounts at first but it doean't take long.Have you tried giving her the spoon when trying to feed her? I load the spoon and ds does the rest (via her nose/ears/hair etc)

Banana or avocado on rice cakes were v popular to start with my dd - or slices of either without the cake go down a treat here too. Instant and easy too.

TrinityRhino · 10/12/2008 20:23

anything...except shellfish and nuts just now

give her the spoon

enjoy

Thank you! Shall try spreading her rice cakes with puree, banana etc. She had breadstick dipped in parsnip & carrot puree tonight so hopefully that's one way to go. It's the gagging and fear of her choking which makes me nervous.

I know these aren't very exciting, but you could give her buttered toast a few mornings a week, it's quick and easy (which I'm sure you appreciate with twins!) Mine loves toast. And you could try your fruit purees on it, or Philadelphia, or hummous, or sugar-free jam...

Mine refused to be spoonfed too, btw, but I'm really enjoying her mealtimes now she's doing it herself and we've got the hang of it a bit. I ended up spreading the purees on rice cakes and bread sticks too!

There's also French toast/eggy bread - you could just use the yolk to start with if you're worried about allergies.

Then there's all the fruit and veg, my dd loves big chunks of boiled or roast potatoes..

Sorry - I didn't see you'd already mentioned toast! When she gets the hang of it you could start giving her whatever you're eating minus salt, to save time on preparing anything special. I made falafel last night and my lo had it for the first time and loved it. Whenever you're happy about giving these things, there's also meatballs, chicken, lentil burgers/patties, bean spreads, etc..

Thanks Pispirispis ... lots of ideas! Is your lo okay with chunks of potato ... is that better than teeny pieces cut up? My heart is in my mouth incase a too big chunk gets swallowed and she can't gag it back up. You wouldn't think I've already weaned two boys but they had no problem with spoon feeding - it's this refusal of the spoon which is throwing me. I give them toast at dinner-time a couple of evenings a week (if I can't be bothered steaming veg and if they've already had something substantial at lunchtime) ... is toast too much at breakfast time? Mind you ... there was a huge lump of carrot in her poo this morning so she swallowed something last night !!! Oh, what about pasta? We're having penne tonight with bacon in a cream sauce ... could I chop the pasta into little pieces - is wheat okay at 7 mths? Ooooh I've forgotten soo much!

Well my lo is my first so I'm no expert! She's 7.5 months and I did purees with her for a month, from 6 months. She was never that keen, and eventually flat out refused to let me spoonfeed her. I noticed how much she enjoyed rice cakes, so I started looking at baby-led weaning websites and gave my dd batons of cooked veg and broccoli like you've done. We started 2 weeks ago and it's going really well.

I've found the baby-led weaning websites really useful, there are loads of recipes and ideas on them. I had never really thought of doing BLW before because I didn't really know much about it, and no-one I know has done it. I've since read about quite a few people who've done BLW because their independent-minded los refused to be spoonfed! The websites I've found really good are:
forum.babyledweaning.com
babyledweaning.blogware.com
www.babybanana.biz

The gagging thing is scary, my dd actually did a big gag last night on a piece of boiled potato, but she got it out ok. I've read instructions for what you should do if your lo chokes, which I hope never to have to use! Apparently it's pretty rare, anyway. My dd really did gag much more on the mashed potato I used to spoonfeed her than she does now. For lunch today she fed herself mashed potato with leek and no probs. We use three spoons - I hand her one at a time and take my hand away quick before she starts yanking and complaining about my hand being there!! I was surprised about how much goes in. Maybe you could try that, or she might end up eating mushy stuff with her hands, which would be less time-consuming for you! She also had an egg-yolk omlette cut into strips which you could try.

As for wheat/allergies, etc, everyone will tell you something different. A lot of experts seem to say that as long as there are no allergies in your family, you should be ok giving them anything except shellfish, whole nuts and honey from 6 months. Others say no wheat until a year, no egg white until 8 or 9 months or something, and I can't remember about citrus fruit, something like 9 months?? There are others here that know more about that than me! There are no allergies in my family, so I started with fruit, veg and pulses only, I started egg yolk, cheese, yoghurt and wheat at 7 months or so and will give her egg white soon. I'm careful with citrus but I have given her clementines. I don't give her loads of wheat either and try to give her as much porridge as possible! The only thing I'm really careful about is to give her no added salt. So, it's up to you, everyone's different.

If I were you I would give her the pasta with the sauce and without the bacon, but I wouldn't cut it up. I would give it whole so she can pick it up and give it a suck. I give my lo pretty much everything cut into a big chip shape/size, so she can hold it. I don't chop stuff up because she'd have too much trouble getting it to her mouth.

I wouldn't worry about her eating too little, even though she's small. I know that's difficult though, but as long as she's having her milk she'll be fine, and has ages to get used to eating. My dd isn't really eating huge volumes at all, but she's having fun and I've relaxed, and she is eating a bit more each time. They're not going to starve themselves, with us offering them milk and food all the time!

Oh the other thing I would recommend for finger food is Finger Food for Babies and Toddlers by Jennie Maizels. Loads of easy stuff to make. Maybe you could stop spoonfeeding DT1 and give them both the same food at the same time, to make it easier for you? That would look sooo cute as well, I'd love to see photos!!

Best of luck!

chaosisawayoflife · 12/12/2008 19:24

What they said. Also, if you have a couple of spare quid hanging around, I strongly recommend this book. Its given me lots of ideas to feed my lo (and me too, most of the recipes are things you want to eat yourself).

chaosisawayoflife · 12/12/2008 19:26

Sorry, pispirispis, didn't see you'd recommended the same book at the bottom of your post, speed reading as usual!

Millie1 · 12/12/2008 20:46

Thanks again Pisprispis and Chaosisawayoflife - have put a couple of books in my Amazon basket and plan to sit and read the blog links.

Yesterday, DT2 had ricecakes with humous spread on them .... loved them . No porridge yesterday but a spoonful today - gave her the spoon and she sort of sucks it off her fingers - ugh! Lunch today was ricecakes spread with carrot & parsnip puree - and I even slipped a couple of spoons in when she was distracted ... didn't gag - yeah! We'll keep working at it but she certainly likes to be in control and enjoys sucking at breadsticks/ricecakes/toast etc.
